Koho Shoda Signed Japanese Early Showa Woodblock Print Starry Night On Lake Biwa

About the Item

A beautifully and serenely composed image by renowned Japanese artist/printmaker Shoda Koho (1871-1946). This work titled "Starry Night on Lake Biwa (Sometimes known as "Lake Biwa")" is from his Hasegawa’s Night Scenes series (In the 1920s, the publisher Hasegawa commissioned a small group of 6 printmakers to create woodblock prints for a series entitled “Hasegawa’s Night Scenes“, of which there were a total of 21 prints created). The work features a lone boatman transporting his lone passenger across the quiet, still lake beneath a tall pine tree as distant lanterns and brightly lit stars above help guide him through the falling darkness of the night. It is a lovely, atmospheric scene. Shoda Koho (庄田耕峯, ca. 1871-1946) was born in Kanda, Tokyo. He is associated with the Shin-Hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century that revitalized the traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods. This movement was also influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and scenes in nature. The work is signed and titled on the matting just below the image. A much coveted image. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
