About the Item

A fine and well carved Chinese spinach jade incense tool vase, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong or Jiaqing Period, 18th/19th century, China. The small jade vase of medium dark green hue with black flecks throughout, commonly known as spinach jade. The jade with nice translucency. The slightly flattened body of the vase well caved in the Mughal style, with a design of scrolling lotus blossoms and leaves in relief. The tall, narrow neck featuring a downward trailing leaf design. The flat topped mouth with a curved lip. The vase set on a tall and waisted deeply recessed foot. The interior and recessed foot nicely hollowed. Small vases such as these were an integral part of incense sets, which would have included a small box to store precious incense, a censer to burn the incense, tongs and a spoon, and a small vase to store the tongs and spoon. Mughal style carved jades were especially popular in 18th century China under the Qianlong Emperor who championed their free flowing and expertly carved designs. Provenance: Private San Francisco collection, purchased December 12, 1980 from G. Malina Inc., New York City.
