About the Item

With its speckled white color and perfectly round form, this marble bi disc has a certain celestial quality, like a full moon gleaming in the night sky. Found in the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors and aristocrats, bi discs such as this have a mysterious and spiritual history, and their function and significance remain uncertain. Thought to provide a conduit to the heavenly realm, bi discs are defined by their round, flattened shape and always carved of fine jade or dense hardstone. Set on a custom steel mount, this contemporary example layers effortlessly into minimal interiors as an abstract sculpture with soft, satiny texture. This charming teapot dates to the late Qing dynasty and is hand-carved from a hollow length of bamboo to appear as though parceled by a cloth strung with tassels. The teapot has a squat, rounded form and a dark brown finish, reminiscent of Yixing red clay teapots...
