About the Item
Vintage Indonesian Kain Panjang and Matching Selendang Batik Tulis, Cirebon, Java 1960.
A fine hand drawn wax resist painting by canting on cotton of a traditional flora and fauna pattern of indigo blue with some yellow in-painting on a beige reserve ground. The design encased by a wavy border on both textiles. The Kain Pajang textile design is complemented on one end with the "tumpal" (triangle) design (a pan-Southeast Asian motif that commonly occurs on northern Javanese batiks) symbolizing growth and fertility, as well as, the sacred mount Meru. The shoulder cloth terminating on both ends in a drawn fringe as well as an actual fringe.
