Pair of Italian 19th Century Neoclassical Style Marble and Porphyry Columns
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
A sensational and extremely decorative pair of Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. marble and porphyry columns. Each column has a square Vert Antico base below the mottled white Carrara and Sienna marble plinth. Each central solid red porphyry column is decorated by a white Carrara marble circular mottled base and capital. At the top of each column is an elegant ornamental green porphyr urn.

It was a deep purple color with flecks of larger white crystals and was perfect for carving. This porphyry quickly became the most prestigious stone for the elite of Rome and Byzantium. For centuries the Romans quarried this treasured stone...

Named for the griotte cherry for its deep, rich color, Red Griotte was the favorite marble for Royal apartments in the 18th century and was used to create the fireplace mantel in the office of Louis XIV in Versailles. Regence style tripod giltwood stand
Located in Paris, FR
Stand or torchiere holder in gilded wood, molded and carved with shells, scrolls and acanthus leaves on a tripod base. Regency style. It can hold a torchiere or a vase.
What is a torchiere?
The word torchere is first mentioned, according to Harvard, in the dictionnaire de l'Académie in 1696, but, the author points out, the term had already been in use for more than twenty years. At first, the torchere seems to have been a large candlestick, significantly larger and sturdier than ordinary candlesticks. Towards the end of the 17th century, the torchiere included several torches. This multiplied the number of lighting sources. A little later, the torchiere was transformed into a pedestal table on which candlesticks, candelabras and girandoles were placed. Intended for the homes of the wealthy classes, the silver torchiere...
