Mid-19th Century French Brass Repousse Cachepot from French Chateau
About the Item
Originally used in the kitchen of a chateau, this large scale French brass cooking pot from the mid nineteenth century displays the intricate repousse work of the artisan who created it. The piece features a coat of arms that includes the fleur de lys, a symbol of the French monarchy, along with a crown above, and two opposing lions. Additional fleurs-de-lys detail each side of the central motif and the ends of the piece. On the opposite side of the pot is the face of a fantastical beast. The pot is also detailed with intricate scrolling acanthus leaves and a tufted quilt pattern. A copper riveted iron handle allowed for carrying or hanging over a fire. Found in the region of Burgundy, this piece would be ideal for use as a unique planter or cachepot, but could also serve as a wine chiller for multiple bottles. c. 1850.
