Aldo Londi for Bitossi Majolica Broken Gold Bowl or Ashtray, Italy

About the Item

Unusual triangular bowl or ashtray features Oro Rotto, or Broken Gold, glaze on black background with grey glaze accents. The Broken Gold glaze was designed to look like gilded 18th Century Chinese lacquer, with the gold cracks revealing the color of the underlying lacquer. Minimal, almost monochromatic color palette prevents the strong graphic composition from becoming overwhelming; abstract metallic gold pattern adds contrast and guides the eye along the lines of the piece. The bowl is marked with ITALY on the bottom; it is missing the distributor sticker. Most of the Bitossi designs of the period were created by Aldo Londi, including the pieces with Oro Rotto glaze; however, we saw a very similar bowl or ashtray attributed to Alvino Bagni by reputable sellers.
