Antique 19th Century French Hand-Painted Earthenware Bowl by Emile Gallé

About the Item

A wonderful, antique earthenware piece signed by the great French artist, Emile Gallé (see photo of markings on the base). This beautiful, reticulated, earthenware bowl/basket dates from the 1870/80s. It is decorated with delicate, hand-painted flowers, leafs and even a butterfly in burgundy red and dark green. The motifs are different on each side of this square-shaped dish. The maker's mark on the base indicates that the bowl dates from between 1877 and 1889. Emile Gallé (1846-1904) was a French glass maker, ceramist, and designer known as one of the most outstanding glass artists of the 19th-century. He was also a pioneering artist of the Art Nouveau movement. He was one of the founders of the Nancy School (École de Nancy): A group of influential Art Nouveau artisans and designers working in Nancy, France between 1890 and 1914. In good antique condition. No chips or repairs. There is one, hardly visible, hairline crack on the rim (see photo). Minor signs of wear on the surface, I.e. scratches on the base and on the red-painted rim (see photos), consistent with age (see photos). Dimension: width 21 cm/ 8 1/4", depth 21 cm/8 1/4", height 8.5 cm/ 3 1/2". Weight: 681 g/ 1.5 lb
