An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian English sterling silver jewelry box; an addition to the ornamental silverware collection This exceptional antique silver jewelry box, in sterling standard, has been modelled in the form of a dressing table. The surface of this Edwardian jewelry box is plain and embellished with two applied sterling silver balls to the anterior convex arched surface, replicating the details of the draw handles. The original hallmarked hinged cover is plain and parallels the shape of the body, opening to reveal the original segmented velvet interior. The weighted base of this exceptional antique box retains the original leatherette covering to the underside. The box is supported by four subtly tapering pillar style legs Note: The majority of such boxes have a wood lining to the interior; it is a sign of quality when boxes have unlined interiors in addition to a solid silver cover. Condition This antique silver box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The box has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. The original interior and leatherette covering have wear in keeping with age and use. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover are all very clear. French Medieval Style Silver Jewelry Box, circa 1880
Located in Miami, FL
A remarkable intricately designed, handcrafted silver box, circa 1880s. We were told that this box is sterling silver and that the makers mark "M" is that of "M. Mayer". Maurice MAYER was a very prestigious silversmith. Research shows that he was an "Orfèvre de l'Empereur", Napoleon Bonaparte, 1860-1870. The Minerva hallmarks are not visible, may have been rubbed off from use and cleaning. No documentation. This intricately carved box depicts the romantic poem of Le Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose). Comes with the original lock and key. Le Roman de la Rose, begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230 and completed, in a different style, circa 1270-1280, by Jean de Meun, builds on the concept of courtly love found in the poetry of the troubadours. The authors create a complex allegory of the romance between the Lover and the Rose. In the quest to pick the Rose (to achieve the conquest of love), the flower and its attendants represent the Lady and her sentiments while being wooed. In the first part of the poem, written by de Lorris, the Lover recounts his dream, ending with the winning of a kiss from the Lady. In the dream, the Lover discovers a walled garden and gains entrance thanks to a beautiful young woman. He meets Diversion and dancers who represent courtly values such as Beauty and Generosity. A tour of the garden brings him to a beautiful bed of roses by the Fountain of Love...

If you have jewelry, chances are you have an antique or vintage jewelry box. This simple item was born from a simple need. It offers jewelry lovers a place to store their most cherished treasures. The idea behind a good jewelry box is that precious items deserve a place of honor.

It’s no surprise, then, that jewelry boxes (also called jewelry caskets or trinket boxes) have existed for as long as we’ve worn jewelry. It’s among the most popular decorative boxes we have in our homes, and we can find early versions that date at least as far back as Ancient Egypt. All Egyptians adorned themselves with necklaces, rings, earrings and other accessories, and the era’s jewelry boxes resembled small treasure chests. Later, fine jewelry became cost prohibitive and the only people with jewelry boxes were those who could afford jewelry.

Following the Industrial Revolution, jewelry was no longer made by hand. Mass production and the demand of the growing middle class rendered jewelry more accessible. Jewelry of the Romantic period, which refers to early Victorian jewelry, is reflective of these economic shifts. Jewelry from this time tends to be feminine and ornate, and embellished with seed pearls, coral and turquoise. Naturally, it was stored in elaborate, decorative Victorian-era jewelry boxes that were sometimes crafted from hand-painted porcelain or sterling silver.

Nowadays, jewelry boxes do more than keep jewelry safe and organized. They’re popular collector’s items that have become as treasured as the contents themselves.

Designer jewelry boxesChanel jewelry boxes, Hermès jewelry boxes and others created by celebrated fashion labels — are widely sought by jewelry lovers who covet a chic case for their jewelry essentials. An eye-catching vintage jewelry box, which is at least 20 but less than 100 years old, is a valuable decorative object, a sign of luxury and elegance that adds character and texture to any bedroom. Some jewelry boxes are even embellished with a few jewels of their own.

If you’re not tucking your jewelry into a drawer or shallow tray atop your vanity, perhaps an Art Deco trinket box with charming brass hardware or a sculptural, hand-carved rosewood mid-century modern jewelry box lined with linen and velvet will do?

Today’s jewelry boxes come in a variety of styles and sizes and are made of metal, wood, plastic and other materials. Give your cherished jewelry the good home it deserves — find an extensive collection of antique and vintage jewelry boxes today on 1stDibs.
