About the Item
Fine silver, niello and vermeil silver antique snuff box depicting a handsome Scottish bagpipe player performing in a bucolic countryside setting.
19th Century
The Scottish bagpipe player figure is centrally depicted, performing to an audience of a lady and gentleman in an idyllic countryside setting with a group of animals gathered to hear the music. The scene is framed by artistic niello enamel panels of intricately entwined flowers which include the famed Scottish thistle, the National emblem of Scotland. The sides and base of the box are entirely decorated by stylized miniature arch motifs in the niello technique. Interior is beautifully rendered in vermeil silver. Most silver and niello boxes have the the cover, sometimes the sides decorated as the technique is complex and time consuming- rarely do we see the entire box including the base completely done in niello. The superb quality of this box indicates that it was made for a connoisseur.
Marks: Boar French silver hallmark on the interior side of the cover.
Condition: This box is in excellent condition with age appropriate wear to the niello. Beautifully crafted, of exquisite detail and a pleasure to hold.
