Very Rare 19th Century Coromandel Veneered Year-Running Clock by Thomas Cole
Located in London, GB
A Superb Coromandel-Veneered Mantle Clock The case constructed of very well-figured Coromandel giving the maximum amount of decorative effect, with gilt bronze accents; the plinth base of rectangular form, with everted stepped corners, and precisely chased gilt bronze figures, two representing Mercury-the god of travel and merchants with his winged helmet and coin purse in hand; the others representing Fortuna-the goddess of luck; the sides glazed, with mooresque arcaded pierced mounts enclosing a vase, in gilt bronze with overlapping palm trees above: the top of domed form with an octagonal platform, surmounted by an architectural dome, its engraved detail and structure reminiscent of Byzantine prototypes. The silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals for the hours, and within an arabesque dial divided into quadrants, with the key aperture at 6 o'clock. Below, the manual calendar, and a semi-circular thermometer. The dial signed by the retailer "Hunt & Roskell / London." The mechanism replaced with a one-year duration movement by Achille Brocot. English, circa 1860 A closely related clock, by Thomas Cole, though not bearing his signature, with a case of identical form and differing bronze decoration, previously with Butchoff. A third known coromandel-veneered example, also unsigned, is discussed by John...

French Rococo Ormolu Mantel Clock Set by Samuel Marti
Located in Miami, FL
A very large and fine antique French clock set, circa 1880. It is of Rococo design boldly modeled in gilt bronze. Waisted keyhole shape with acanthus leaf shoulders, 'C' scroll feet standing on its original integral base. The top adorned with a putti and a musical instrument. To the sides are sound frets. The large dial is porcelain. The design is attributed to by the highly inventive and influential rococo goldsmith and architect Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). Born in Turin, Meissonnier emigrated to France to work in the royal Gobelins factory in 1724 and in 1726 succeeded Jean II Bérain as architect and draughtsman to the Chambre et Cabinet du Roi. His designs for candelabra and other objects appear in the Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier, Livre de Chandeliers de Sculpture en Argent published by Gabriel Huquier in the 1740s. A similar candelabrum in the Munich Residenz is illustrated in Ottomeyer and Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen (Munich 1986). The French movement is of high quality and is by Samuel Marti...

Grimaldi and Johnson, Strand, London. Miniature Bracket Timepiece
Located in Amersham, GB
A very fine and rare miniature bracket timepiece made by one of Britain’s most revered horological partnerships. The eight day single fusee movement held by four turned pillars with anchor escapement, adjustable lenticular pendulum and hold fast, is of exceptional quality. Housed in an ebonised and glazed bell top bracket clock case of a design particularly associated with this firm, the silvered roman dial with subsidiary date dial in the break arch is signed and also on back plate. This clock is in excellent original condition with a fully glazed back door and side panels with the U shaped carrying handle, a distinctive trademark of Grimalde and Johnson, standing on turned acorn feet. William Johnston is first recorded in partnership with Peter Grimalde between 1810 and 1825, before setting out on his own, Grimalde & Johnston were celebrated precision chronometer makers, and are known for making this style of miniaturised bracket clock during this period in very limited numbers. Examples of clocks by Grimalde and Johnson can be found in, “The Georgian Bracket Clock, 1714-1830” by Richard Barber and “English Bracket and Mantel Clocks” By Andrew Nicholls...

By William F. Evans of Handsworth
Located in New Orleans, LA
This remarkable English Litchfield Cathedral skeleton clock, crafted by Evans of Handsworth, captures the essence of the famed Lichfield Cathedral with its iconic three-spire top and stunning Gothic architecture. This extraordinary timepiece features an intricate skeleton design, revealing its impressive two-train chain fuseé movement that powers an eight-day movement, chiming the hours on a melodious gong. The dial is a masterpiece in itself, intricately pierced and engraved in silver, displaying the time with Roman numerals and blued steel hands. The clock sits gracefully atop its original rosewood base. The Birmingham firm of William F. Evans of Handsworth was one of the most respected makers of skeleton clocks of the 19th century. The golden age of their manufacture occurred between the 1860s through the 1880s, and the firm was renowned for the stellar quality, grand size and superior materials utilized in the creation of their clocks. Of the many cathedrals they produced, the Litchfield Cathedral skeleton clock has earned a prominent status in today's market, being highly sought-after and coveted by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Skeleton clocks stand out as exceptional and captivating timepieces, meticulously crafted to reveal the inner workings of the mechanism in all their glory. Originating as early as the mid-16th Century as drum clocks, these intricately designed clocks are a testament to the finest craftsmanship of their time. Neo-Egyptian Marble Clock Attributed to G. Servant, France, Circa 1870
Located in PARIS, FR
Black and red marble pyramid shaped Egyptian style clock attributed to G. Servant, surmounted by a patinated bronze figure representing the Egyptian goddess Isis sitting on her throne. Wearing the Hathor hairdress (the solar disc surrounded by the sacred cow horns), she holds in her right hand the Ouadj, the goddesses scepter surmounted by a canopy of papyrus, symbolizing health and eternal youth and in her left hand, the cross of life Ankh, symbol of rebirth and eternity. That Egyptian style in fashion since Napoleon the First and his military campaigns in Egypt around 1799 was rediscovered in France in the 1830's and above all in the 1860's. Some renowned French artists, such the sculptors and bronze-casters Guillaume Denière (1815-1903), Emile Hébert (1828-1893) et Georges Servant (1828-1890), presented at the 1867 and 1878 Paris Universal Exhibitions, an a-part section dedicated to their Egyptian style production. Their shows drew then considerable attention from the public and the wealthy collectors. During the 1867 Universal Exhibition, one could admire the Stand realized by the French silversmith-jeweller Gustave Baugrand (1826-1870), where his works executed in most Fine materials took inspiration from the Egyptian Antiques, exhibited then in the Louvre museum. Georges Emile Henri Servant (1828-c.1890), who took over his father in 1855 at their foundry, rue Vieille-du-Temple, in Paris, specialized in the production of neo-Egyptian style clocks, very popular in France since 1860’s, and also the making of Greek style decorative objects. He drew considerable attention to the high quality of his bronzes at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition and then at the 1862 London Exhibition. At this time Servant exported up to 40% of his production, principally to the United States, where for instance, his clocks were sold with great success by Louis Tiffany Inc. or Hamann & Roche of New York. But his success came really at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he was awarded a gold medal for his neo-Greek and Egyptian works (Les Merveilles...
