Bronze sculpture in verdigris patina by Gabriel Forestier (1889-1969), representing "Aphrodite".Signed Gabriel Forestier on the base; also inscribed "Alexis Rudier Fondeur Paris". France Circa 1930 Provenance: Private New York Art Deco collection. Forestier entered the Municipal School of Fine Arts of Bordeaux in 1907. He won the end-of-year competition in 1907 and was authorized to compete for the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris where he was permanently admitted in 1908. He settled in Paris. From 1909, at the age of 20, he received his first orders. He exhibited regularly at the Salon of French Artists between 1910 and 1939, and won several medals there. After the war, he obtained several commissions for war memorials across France: He sculpted the War Memorial of La Force, that of Ducey in 1921. In 1922, he made a study trip to Italy and continued his artistic research. He created the war memorials of Bergerac in 1927, and that of his hometown, Eymet. In 1930-1931, he participated in the creation of the large bas-relief for the facade of the Musée des Colonies, for the colonial exhibition of 1931. Returning to Paris, he continued his work. His "Giant Suffocating a Snake" from the Salon of 1934 earned him a gold medal, and he received the grand prize of the International Exhibition of 1937 for the creation of the sculpture of the bronze door of the City's museum of modern art from Paris. He received the title of knight in 1939, then Officer of the Legion of Honor of Arts and Letters in 1949 for his works. He served as a jury at the École des Beaux-Arts between 1939 and 1942. Very rare box, created during the art deco period in the city of Pforzheim Germany, back in the 1934. This colorful box is closely to mint condition, designed with geometric shapes at the Louis Kuppenheim silversmith workshop. It was crafted with impeccable details in solid .935/.999 silver, with gilded finish in the interior and embellished with classic chiseled borders. Has an exceptional workmanship as you expect of the workshop of Louis Kuppenheim, with a remarkable geometric composition made up with red, blue and black enamels topped with accents in yellow gold. It is fitted with discrete invisible hinges and with one integrated mechanical push button for opening.
Weight: 188.20 Grams, (120.64 Dwt).
Measurements: 73 mm by 84 mm by 14 mm (2.87 x 3.31 x 0.55 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with German marks, the maker's mark LK Inside an oval cartouche associated to the workshop of Louis Kuppenheim, the mark for the assay of the .935 silver, the case model number and signed, "LK .935 STERLING 192".

The company was grounded in 1854 by Louis Kuppenheim (1824-1889) and Heinrich Witzenmann, specialized in silver and gold and enameled artefacts. On the World Exhibition in 1900 the firm received a gold medal for a letter opener. In that same year the company opened a branch in the Rue Richelieu 67 in Paris. In these years some designs by Hans Christiansen were executed, amongst them very delicately enameled silver cigarette cases...

It measures 4.8 in high x Ø 8.26 in; foot Ø 4.33 in (12.2 x Ø 21 cm; Ø foot 11 cm)

The rounded bowl narrows and rests on a flared foot with a polygonal section in blue crystal. The bowl itself is crafted in transparent crystal and continues the polygonal motif. The base of the bowl is decorated with a series of engraved blue arches which somewhat overlap creating a corolla and with five vertical cusps of the same colour. The rim is accented with a triple cut line around the entire circumference.
A silver band representing a currant branch wraps the “waist” where the foot joins the bowl with currants made of orange coral.
The bowl features the following marks along the silver band which defines its narrowing towards the foot. These help us date the work:
1) a lozenge with the abbreviation of the province (MI); Roman fasces; the number 08. This was the mark in force after the promulgation of the law of 5 February 1934 n. 305, which provided for the use of a uniform mark for the identification of the silversmith and of the province. In this case it is the Milanese smith Eliseo Mangili during the period 1935-1944.

Ignacio Gallo was born in Valladolid, Spain in the 19th century. He worked from 1910–1935 specialising in statuettes of bathers, dancers, nudes and pagan goddesses. While working in Paris in the mid to late 1920s he created this piece of two women dancing. Unlike a nude sculpture, this gives us a glimpse of the era with the fashionable bobbed hairdo, and the shortened skirt.
The 1920s “Jazz Age” saw a great deal of same sex dancing partners some of it romantic but more often just the popularity of both social dance and “artistic” (think Isadora Duncan) as well as “cabaret” performance. This lively sculpture is a nod to all three forms.
