18th Century Italian Angels with Tangerine Quartz Crystals Mounted on Aragonite
Located in Dublin, Dalkey
Pair of 18th century Italian hand-carved gold leaf angels with tangerine quartz crystals and mounted on aragonite. The hand-carved angels were once part of a heavenly, angelic depiction in a historic church in Tuscany. The angel arms and feet are adorned with the tangerine quartz crystals to restore the broken aspects of the figurative pair. They appear partially crystalized in form. The aragonite is from Morocco and has many different formations. This one in particular emulates a cloud which is compliments the 18th century Italian gilded angels. The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she created the piece and the period shows that the pair of Italian angels...

Rare Meissen Rococo Genre Group 'The Happy Parents', by M V Acier, Circa 1860
Located in Vienna, AT
Exceptional Meissen porcelain group of the 19th century: Young mother in elaborate Rococo house dress: Ruched wide long skirt, bodice, fitted frilled coat with hood, the upswept hair covered by a high voluminous bonnet with ruched hem and bows, sitting on a splendid Louis XVI style bench and placing her right foot on a stool, beside her the happy spouse in frock coat, waistcoat over frilled shirt and knee breeches with white stockings, both embracing each other at the back and looking down at the baby wrapped in cloth and lying half naked on a cushion on both their laps, the father guiding his right hand to the mother's chin in an affectionate gesture. Behind them a little boy in a playsuit and hat, holding a bowl and blowing soap bubbles with a tube. The group is based on an oval natural base with sculpted flowers and foliage and gold heightened lateral frieze decoration. Particularly elaborate, detailed design and staffage. Designed by MICHAEL VICTOR ACIER (1736 - 1799) Skilled as a sculptor in Paris, he received a call to the porcelain manufactory in Meissen in 1764, and was there, after Kändler's death in 1775, solely responsible for the artistic interests of the manufactory. He created a large number of groups in the Watteau style...

Excellent Meissen Rococo Love Group 'The Test Of Love', by M.V. Acier, Ca 1860
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent Rococo love group in splendid clothes in front of ornate column monument: the gallant sitting on the pedestal of the pedestal at the feet of his beloved, on his lap a basket full of flowers and a flower garland, a sign of his exuberant love, handing the beloved a bouquet of flowers, the latter plucking off the petals of a flower one after the other to find out whether he really loves her or not - a time-honored game of lovers. The group is characterized by particularly elaborate, detailed and loving design and staffage and is based on oval meadow base with gold heightened lateral frieze decoration and gold borders. A successful representation of one of the bourgeois themes that had become popular in the course of the 18th century, for example, through the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725 - 1805). Designed by MICHAEL VICTOR ACIER (1736 - 1799) Skilled as a sculptor in Paris, he received a call to the porcelain manufactory in Meissen in 1764, and was there, after Kaendler's death in 1775, solely responsible for the artistic interests of the manufactory. Early 19th Century English Regency Greek Revival Gilt Carving of a Sphinx
Located in Chicago, IL
From the 1700s through the early 1800s, European aristocrats developed a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture and design that culminated in a full Egyptian Revival. Prominent figures such as Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned rooms decorated with Egyptian motifs. This cultural moment reflects a fascination with a sophisticated civilization of great artists and pharaohs. The Regency era possessed very little knowledge of the Great Pyramids or hieroglyphics, a quality that lent Egyptian art interpretation a compelling air of mystique. This English Regency period gilt carving depicts a popular figure of borrowed Egyptian motif: the Sphinx. Recognized among educated circles as a symbol of brilliance in the ancient past, the Sphinx was well-known as a mythological creature who destroys those who failed to answer her riddle. Such a piece as this, excellent in detail and craftsmanship, may have once graced the mantle of a gentleman’s study or been exchanged as a gift between British scholars. The beautiful gold surface has been achieved by an artful combination of gilt and gesso; the art enthusiast will appreciate the intricate texture realized in the carving’s hair and tail as well as the delicate detailing of the saddle. Borrowing from the Egyptians, the Greeks had their own interpretation of the Sphinx. Greek mythology chronicled the Sphinx as being the daughter of Orthous and Chimera or Laius and attributed the riddles, which she proposed, as having been taught to her by the Muses. Crowned with a Grecian diadem and having a refined expression, she evokes an ancient yet reserved intellect. For the modern-day enthusiast of classical Greek art...

Massive Staffordshire Pearlware Pottery Figure of Venus, circa 1810 The extremely large figure depicts Venus, Aphrodite of the Classical Greek legend. This model is of great rarity. Venus, is superbly painted, depicted in purple robes with green edging as she rise from the foam of the sea The condition is excellent. Only one other example is known- see below. History of Venus Venus is the Roman goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. She is the equivalent of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Venus was born from the foam of the sea after Uranus, the sky god, was castrated by his son Cronus. She was carried to the island of Cythera by seashells and then to Mount Olympus, where she became the wife of Vulcan, the god of fire. Venus in Art Venus has been a popular subject for artists since ancient times. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman, nude or partially clothed, and is often accompanied by symbols of love and beauty, such as doves, roses, and apples. Meissen Porcelain Group 'Europe on the Bull', by J.F. Eberlein, circa 1860
Located in Vienna, AT
Excellent large meissen figurine group around 1860: Beautiful, youthful Europe, the primordial mother of the continent, with her hair tied back and adorned with flowers, sits sideways on the strong, white bull, which is actually the transformed father of the god Zeus, who kidnaps the young woman. She is covered only with a large floor-length cloth with golden stars. With her right hand she holds on to one of the animal's horns, with her left hand she grasps its neck, a flower garland adorns the animal's head, two nymphs wrapped in shawls kneel at Europe's feet and offer flowers from a basket. The group is based on an oval base with rocaille decoration heightened in gold. Design: Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1695 - 1749) From 1735 sculptor and modeller at the Meissen porcelain factory. Eberlein worked with Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1706 - 1775) - a modeller at the Meissen manufactory since 1731: Together with J. J. KÄNDLER and Johann Gottlieb Ehder, he created the swan service with more than 2,200 individual items between 1737 and 1742. Eberlein's own creations show classical deities on opulent baroque...

Antique, New and Vintage Sculptures

Styling your home with vintage, new and antique sculptures means adding a touch that can meaningfully transform the space. By introducing a sculptural work as a decorative finish to any interior, you’re making a statement, whether you tend toward the dramatic or prefer to keep things casual with modest, understated art.

A single, one-of-a-kind three-dimensional figurative sculpture mounted on your dining room wall is a guaranteed conversation piece, while a trio of abstract works arranged on your living room bookshelves can add spontaneity to the collection of first-edition novels or artist monographs you’re displaying as well as draw attention to them. Figurative sculptures are representational works that portray a specific person, animal or object. And while decorating with busts, which are sculpted or cast figurative works, hasn’t exactly topped the list of design trends every year, busts are back. According to designer Timothy Corrigan, “They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give.” Abstract sculptures, on the other hand, are not meant to show something specific. Instead, they invoke a mood or scene without directly stating what they are portraying.

Busts made of stone or metal may not seem like a good fit for your existing decor. Fortunately, there are many ways for a seemingly incongruous piece to fit in with the rest of your room’s theme. You can embrace a dramatic piece by making it the focal point of the room, or you can choose to incorporate several elements made out of the same material to create harmony in your space. If an antique or more dramatic piece doesn’t feel like you, why not opt for works comprising plastic, fiberglass or other more modern materials?

When incorporating sculpture into the design of your home — be it the playful work of auction hero and multimedia visionary KAWS, contemporary fiber art from Connecticut dealer browngrotta arts or still-life sculpture on a budget — consider proper lighting, which can bring out the distinctive aspects of your piece that deserve attention. And make sure you know how the size and form of the sculpture will affect your space in whole. If you choose a sculpture with dramatic design elements, such as sharp angles or bright colors, for example, try to better integrate this new addition by echoing those elements in the rest of your room’s design.

Get started on decorating with sculpture now — find figurative sculptures, animal sculptures and more on 1stDibs today.
