Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican.
Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century.
Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. The Greek goddess Aphrodite is often depicted in ancient art with a dolphin. In mythology, dolphins were considered sacred to Aphrodite, and they were associated with love, beauty, and fertility. According to one legend, Aphrodite emerged from the sea on a shell-borne chariot drawn by dolphins, and the creatures were said to be her faithful servants. As a result, images of Aphrodite with dolphins became a popular motif in Greek art, appearing on vases, sculptures, and other decorative objects. The association between Aphrodite and dolphins has continued through the centuries, and the image of the goddess with a dolphin remains a popular symbol of love and beauty.

A fine, rare pair of figures in black basalt from the Neale Manufactory. The Neale pottery was founded in 1778 and ran until around 1792. They made very fine wares, and were on good terms with Wedgwood, with whom they combined shipments to the continent.

Scipione Tadolini was a skilled sculptor whose broad talent covered the neoclassic to the romantic movements. His ancestors from a dynasty of Roman sculptors exerted a profound and lasting influence on the artistic production of the Eternal City. The Greek Slave fully demonstrates his masterly talent and serves as a reminder of antique models and the orientalist influences characterising the second half of the 19th century.
Scipione Tadolini graduated from the Roman Academy and worked with his father on a series of celebrated portraits and ecclesiastical sculptures for Roman churches including a bust of Cardinal Giuseppe Alberghini for the Gesù (1847) and portraits of various members of the Cini family for the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle (1844, 1846). Tadolini is also known as the author of a number of large-scale monuments for patrons around the world including an equestrian group of Simon Bolivar for the city of Lima, Peru. One of his best known sculptures is The Greek Slave which appears in his work from the late 1850s forward.The Greek Slave was created in several sizes in two variations: with the figure’s hand either raised to her chest or to her chin. The small number of versions all indicate the sculptor’s careful attention to the human form and passion with exoticism, which can be noticed through the tumbling folds of the present figure's headdress and the finely articulated jewellery...

Jules-Félix Coutan (22 September 1848 – 23 February 1939) is considered to be one of the most gifted French sculptors and designers of the 19th and early 20th centuries
Coutan studied under the renowned Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872; after his return to Paris he executed the fountain group France Bearing the Torch of Civilization for the Exposition Universelle (1889), one of the two prominent sculptural commissions for the Exposition grounds.[1] Later he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1900, where he expressed his disdain for the researches of Rodin— fumiste—[2] and the Impressionist sculptors who followed him. Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3]
Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4]
