‘Eye of Discovery’ is a unique sculpture by the Cypriot artist, Yorgos Papadopoulos, created from glass, silicone and pigments with a hematite patinated steel bezel and stand.
Papadopoulos has reworked the iconic 'Evil Eye' amulet with his Stratified Jewels Collection. Taking this simple composition as a starting point, the scale is blown up and the colours completely reworked using resins and glass pigments.
Using a pioneering technique he developed at the Royal College of Art. Yorgos combines pigments and shattered sheets of Industrial glass which he then re-laminates them to create architectural-scale artworks that look fragile but are extremely durable.
Yorgos Papadopoulos initially studied as an interior designer at Middlesex University changing to a Ceramics Diploma at the City Lit in London. Whilst studying for his MA in ceramics at the RCA, Papadopoulos became drawn to the glass studios and after an incident where a sheet of Industrial glass was broken, he became seduced by the Material’s contradictory qualities. Excited by what is normally viewed as a bad outcome in the glass Community he spent the rest of his MA experimenting with and breaking glass.
‘Glass is my canvas, hammers are my brushes,’ says Papadopoulos. His ability to exploit and harness accident has informed his entire working practice. His architectural panels create a stunning focus in cool modern spaces, the contrast between the unpredictable movement of fracture and the clean lines of contemporary architecture excite the eye.
Papadopoulos’ work is represented in private collections globally and public collections including; Eskishihir Glass Museum, Eskishihir (Turkey), Derix Glass Studio Taunusstein (Germany) and British Airways Art Collection - Heathrow T4 (UK). The Lunar Sanctuary floor lamp is an ode to French architectural theorist Etienne-Louis Boullée's monument to Newton. A spiritual shrine that turns out was impossible to build. Shaw Liu finds inspiration in this unrealised architecture, particularly its spherical body, which was intended to mimic the effects and day and night. It is the balanced art of light, dark and the in between.
This art deco light features a long, mirrored body, an exploration of the tangible and intangible. Reflections are phantom-like and can be inconsistent. Almost hallucinogenic, Sanctuary's hollow dome symbolises the eternal spirit of Newton, whilst its light is akin to a glowing moon. Best placed as a floor lamp, its interior becomes aglow with the orb sat within it. This piece is an evolution of Sanctuary Illusion, which features a projecting light bulb.
Reminiscent of light bollards, crafted in hand-polished stainless steel. It is made to be paired with an alabaster bulb which mimics the texture and façade of a full moon. A robust and milky mineral prized by Egyptians, it becomes aglow with its distinct pattern.

Metallised using a thermo-coating technique that covers the dense textures in a paper-thin layer of molten metal, the structures preserve the eternal blossom in an almost Pompeiian effect of silhouettes covered in volcanic debris. The form of the Tephra Sculpture 006 comes from the study of plants’ anatomy, revealing an unexpected complexity of botanic forms that symbolise nature’s creativity. The sewing, bending and welding interlaced with the sublime fragility of flowers are blended, and in fact muted, by the rigidity of the industrial metallisation process. Cocooned by streams of liquified metal and finished by hand to achieve a polished or matte texture, the sculptures, reminiscent of monochrome bas-reliefs, establish a new field of exploration for Marcin Rusak Studio...
