About the Item

Beautiful bronze statue by the austrian sculptor and artist Adolf Josef Pohl (born in Vienna April 27th 1872 – July 25th 1930). Depiction of a standing blacksmith in the typical work clothes with a leather apron and shoes made of wood. In one hand the blacksmith is holding a very large hammer. Nicely chiseled and signed on the plinth „A-Pohl“, on marble base. Stamped „AR“ Austrian Reich Vienna. Pohl had been student of the Art School in Vienna, later studied at the academy of Arts under Edmund von Hellmer and Caspar von Zumbusch. Pohl mostly worked on modern everyday items such as vases, candeliers, bowls and mirrors, produced in several different materials. 1900 he was awareded with a bronze medaille in Paris. One of the oldest craftships in the world, the blacksmiths. Three men worked closely together on each forge: the kiln man had to bring the steel to the correct processing temperature in the fire. The blacksmith then worked on it under one of the powerful hammers. To ensure that he ran in a very specific rythm, he signaled to the rifle boy. This regulated the water supply and thus the speed of the water wheel that drove the hammers via a flap. Extreme heat in the furnaces, a cold damp climate in the rest of the forge, loud noise and the transport of heavy load made the work hard and arduous. This bronze sculpture is part of an historical interesting and worth preserving depiction of former craftmanships.
