Popeye Sailor European Sculpture Ebony and Metal Art Deco Hagenauer
Located in Oakland, CA
Popeye the Sailor, a European Sculpture in the style of Hagenauer made of Ebony wood and Metal in the Art Deco style. We have had a few pieces in this treatment, style and materials. They are very rare to find. This one is particularly interesting since it is an homage to the character of Popeye. This sculpture has a slightly cubist feeling with the treatment of black ebony and silver including the navy anchor on its arm obviously inspired by the original Popeye.
It’s not a widely known fact that a real person inspired E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. We have discovered was fashioned to resemble this man Frank “Rocky” Fiegel, whose parents immigrated from Poland to the United States. Rocky was born in 1868-1947 and as an adult he joined the navy. He was considered very strong and smoked a pipe, all characteristics of the cartoon Popeye which became such an important icon of protection, not allowing bullying or to be bulled.

This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A note about the artist: "Raymond Phillips Sanderson (1908–1987) was an American artist and sculptor. Sanderson was born in Bowling Green, Missouri and educated at the Art Institute of Chicago under Raoul Josset. He moved to Bisbee, Arizona for his health in 1932, where he worked as an illustrator and sign painter. His first major commission was the Miner's Monument at the Cochise County Courthouse in Bisbee, popularly known as the Copper Man, as well as some reliefs in the interior of the courthouse. He moved to Phoenix in 1937 to teach at the Phoenix Art Center under sponsorship by the Works Progress Administration. In 1939 he was commissioned by industrialist Rufus Riddlesbarger to outfit and decorate his new house at Riddlesbarger's Lanteen Ranch near Sierra Vista. Sanderson received several significant commissions starting in 1940. Working for the United States Maritime Commission, Sanderson sculpted a series of wood relief panels...

Art Deco Figurine Table Lamp Bronze Lady Sculpture, French, circa 1930
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a stunning figurine table lamp of a nude lady bronze Figurine sculpture made in France, circa 1930.
The figurine is heavy and made of bronze metal with good detail. It has been cold painted with a green colour which has worn away in places, showing a patinated bronze colour beneath. The lady is stood on a round ball above a shaped shell like base. The figure is holding the lamp above her head with the electric cable running into the base and vertically up her back to the lamp fitting above. A coloured spherical glass shade firmly sits in the dished support.
The light is currently fitted with a small bayonet fitting, the whole electrical fitting having been PAT tested for safety compliance in the UK. The fitting could easily be modified to suit the electricity supply of the country where it might be used .
This piece is typical of the Art Deco aesthetic, with the sleek lines of the nude girl figure holding the globe light above.
The lamp is in full working order.
This is a substantial heavy piece weighing about 2.5Kg unpacked.
