A young woman in a long dress with short sleeves, softly enveloping her body, with a scarf covering her hair and falling well over her face to protect her from the burning sun, walking across the field at a leisurely pace, holding out her apron with the seeds spread out in front of her with her left hand and making a sweeping gesture with her right.
On a narrow, elongated natural plinth with rounded corners, with the artist's signature ‘Schork 99’ incised on the side, as well as the Goldscheider manufactory's pressed stamp, pressed model number and incised monogram ‘AH’ on the back behind the figure.
This motif is particularly well known in France, where it adorned all French franc coins and postage stamps for many years and was continued in a stylised form on all cent coins of the euro after 2001.
Louis Oscar Roty (1846 - 1911) This sower is very familiar to the French: she was depicted on the fifty-centime coin and on the one-, two- and five-franc coins until 2001, when a stylised version of her appeared on the ten-, twenty- and fifty-centime coins of the euro. The figure dates back to 1887, when Roty designed a prize medal for the Ministry of Agriculture, a project that was not pursued. When the Minister of Finance commissioned new coins in 1896, Roty was among the selected artists. He drew on the Sower of 1887, but transformed his robust farmer into a slender Marianne, who wore the Phrygian cap of freedom. The traditional profile of the Republic was abandoned in favour of a more active, standing figure. This effigy was criticised, but generally very well received: ‘The seeds she generously throws into the earth are the countless ideas that may one day germinate and flourish when we are no longer here’ (La Liberté, 8 October 1898). The gesture is more symbolic than realistic – we do not sow against the wind, which nevertheless makes the hair behind the sower flutter – but it makes the composition more dynamic. Originally, ‘The Sower’ was used on the fifty-centime to two-franc coins introduced in 1897 and 1898, before appearing on postage stamps in 1903. It is thus the most widely circulated work of art in France. Although not included in the Musée d'Orsay's medal collection, this wax drawing on slate, typical of the technique of a medallist, is one of the most beautiful pieces and demonstrates the virtuosity of Roty. Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet born in Palermo on March 11, 1814 and died in Paris on January 1, 18711 is a French sculptor.
Born in Palermo to French parents, Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet studied sculpture in Italy with Bertel Thorwaldsen, Valerio Villareale and Pietro Tenerani. He came to Paris in 1836, then stayed in Ghent in 1838. After another stay in Italy from 1843 to 1845, he settled permanently in Paris and exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1846. He won a medal of third class in 1847, a second class medal in 1848 and a first class medal in 1851. In 1855 he was awarded a second class medal at the Universal Exhibition. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor by decree of June 14, 18563.
Of neoclassical formation, the work of Pollet oscillates between this current and that of romanticism. In 1840, for the bicentenary of his death, he produced the bust of Rubens, the original plaster of which is kept at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Provenance: The estate of Morton and Estelle Sosland.In Kansas City, the Sosland family name is synonymous with both giving, and the arts. Of their many contributions to the community, 'The Soslands gave one of the nation's finest private collections of American Indian art to the Nelson-Atkins' museum. The content of this auction bears testament to their keen eye and varied interests.
In September 1893 Bourdelle joined the studio of Auguste Rodin. His collaboration with Rodin lasted fifteen years. In 1895, he received his first official commission, a war monument for the city of Montauban. His proposed plans, different from traditional monuments, created a scandal. Rodin intervened on his behalf, and the monument was finally erected in 1902.
In 1900, Bourdelle demonstrated his independence from Rodin's style with a bust of Apollo. In the same year, Bourdelle, Rodin and the sculptor Desbois opened a free school of sculpture, the Institut Rodin-Debois-Bourdelle. One of the students was Henri Matisse, who later produced some remarkable sculpture, but the school did not last long.

In 1905, Bourdelle had his first personal exhibition, in the gallery of the foundry-owner Hébrand. With the support of Hébrand and the material assistance of his foundry, Bourdelle was able to make larger works and earn greater recognition. His father died in 1906, and Bourdelle changed his first name to simply Antoine, after his father. He married his second wife, Cléopatre Sevastos (1892-1972), who was of Greek origin. She and their daughter, Rhodia, became a frequent inspiration for his works.[6]
In 1908, Bourdelle left the studio of Rodin and set out on his own. In 1909 he exhibited a new work, Hercules the Archer at the annual Salon of the Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
