Folk Art Sculptures

FOLK ART STYLE

Folk art is a genre of art that shares the creator’s traditions, offering not just an artistic display but an opportunity to learn about a culture. Antique, new and vintage folk art typically reflects a heritage or location. It can include utilitarian objects and handmade art as diverse as weather vanes, duck decoys, portraiture and paintings, carnival art and quilts.

Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor. Native American folk art includes functional objects reflecting their heritage, such as baskets, textiles and wooden pieces.

Elsewhere, the vast range of work associated with Mexican folk art includes masks made by Mexican craftspeople for traditional celebrations and ceremonial dances. Mexican masks are part of the country’s folk-art traditions that go back thousands of years and play a role in festivals and theater.

Works in the folk art tradition are valuable because of the skills involved, like weaving, hand-carving wood and even stonework. Many folk artists are self-taught, while some train as apprentices within their community. By using available materials and taking a personal approach to their creations, artists ensure each piece is unique and conveys a story.

During the Great Depression, artistic materials in America were hard to come by, so artisans used discarded wood from cigar boxes and shipping crates to make highly stylized, notched pieces — most often picture frames and boxes — that are today sought after by collectors. This folk art style is called tramp art and was popular from roughly 1870 until the 1940s.

Folk art brings vibrant culture and traditions into your home. Browse an extensive collection of antique, new and vintage folk art on 1stDibs.

"Lady Seated in Chair Reading" Money Box/ Still Bank by a. Biagioni, Circa 1925
Located in Incline Village, NV
Penny bank made by Italian Angelo Biagioni for the French market (see image with marking on the back of the chair), circa 1910. Biagioni, born in 1870, was a well known sculptor who crafted objects for resale to the European market. Money boxes (or still banks as they are called in America) were one of the more unique and more difficult items to find by this artist as most objects were basic uni-dimensional sculptered pieces. What makes it more rare is the unfortunate requirement to break and smash the bank open to get the coins out, as there was no mechanism to remove the money. The subject matter of the bank is that of a nicely dressed older lady seated in a chair reading a book. The bank is in all original condition and paint with no restoration or touch-up of any kind. This is a nice addition to any bank or toy collection, or simply to have as a "stand alone" unique item. Dimensions : 4 1/4" deep x 3 3/8" wide x 8 5/8" high. Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys and banks, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage still banks...

Antique, Rare & Decorative Pair of Hand Carved and Hand Painted Horse Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning and unique pair of matching horse sculptures. With a combined experience of almost 30 years in the antiques trade, we were thrilled to once again find beautifully hand-crafted and decorative antiques that we had never seen before. From the density and the weight we can see and feel that these highly decorative horse sculptures are made of a tropical hardwood. Like, for example, with antique mirror frames or church sculptures these horses too were first covered with a mixture of chalk and glue so that the paint would hold longer. And, as so often is the case with antiques, the colors that were used for painting these horses are so much more beautiful than anything you find in this day and age that they truly are an absolute joy to look at. From the colors, the wear, the materials and the techniques that were used to create these horses we can see that these are 19th century antiques. However and unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be able to tell you from which country these highly decorative and sizeable works of art originate. We just can't find matching style horse sculptures anywhere on the worldwide web. They could be Chinese or Nepalese, but they could also be Persian or Arabian. We just have not been able to find out. What we do know is that they are definitely antique, they are in beautiful condition (with some wear, consistent with their age), they are highly decorative, probably unique and they have a look and feel that will instantly change the atmosphere of the room they are in. Mind you, our sharp price for this wonderful pair of horse sculptures...

French Bulldog Doorstop. Hubley, American, circa 1920s

This full figured cast iron, hand painted doorstop, is known as "French Bulldog" and was made by The Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, circa 1920s. A pleasing facial expression (see image) and realistic body creases and characteristics, reveals an accurate rendition of the French bulldog. With it's substantial weight, it can be utilized as a wonderful doorstop to decorate with, or simply put on a shelf for display. Large Creamware Racing Horse Leeds Pottery Made England Circa 1840
Located in Katonah, NY
I have always wanted one of these. I'm thrilled to have found it. This Leeds Pottery stallion has a wonderful face with beautiful eyes. Large creamware enamel-painted horses are rare. Leeds made the largest of the creamware horses. Our horse is 16.75 inches tall x 14.75" long. A similar example can be seen in Leeds Museums and Art Galleries (Temple Newsam House) and was featured in an exhibition during an exhibition that ran from June 1- October 30, 2005, in "The Leeds Pottery 1770 1881". Condition: Excellent with light craquelure in the glaze Price: $9,600 Our horse is cream-colored with an orange harness and a full bushy brown tail. The figure is finely modeled: he stands proudly with his head slightly turned to the right, wearing a halter, the lead line laid across his back. His tail was neatly applied, swinging onto one hind leg. The top of the base is a mottled green within a molded stiff-leaf border glazed in manganese. On his belly and underneath the bottom are two unglazed patches where the model was held up during the firing process. Dealers in equestrian feed, medicine, and tack used large pottery horses in their display windows, like those seen here, to draw in customers. Examples can be found in the Leeds City Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, and the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum. The original Leeds Pottery factory closed around 1849-50. These prominent figures of horses were made for window displays in saddlers and tack stores, for dealers trading in horse equipment...
