Pair of French 19th-20th Century Neoclassical Style Cast Iron Figural Torchères
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine pair of French 19th-20th century neoclassical style patinated cast iron figural torchères by A. Durenne, Paris, each representing a figure of a standing young maiden, her arms raised forward while holding a a flaming urn gas light (Now electrified) with a frosted glass flame, each raised on a veined grey marble column stand, both cast-signed 'A. Durenne, Paris'. Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm, circa Paris, 1900. Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic Expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...

Mid-Century French Signed Lalique Frosted Crystal Sparrow Sculptures, Set of 4
Located in Dallas, TX
Decorate a shelf or a desk with this set of vintage bird sculptures. Created in France by Lalique circa 1970, each frosted crystal bird is signed on the base; it includes "Le Moineau Moqueur", "Le Moineau Coquet" and "Le Moineau Timide". The four paperweight birds are in excellent condition with rich colors. Etched signature Lalique France on the bottom for further authentication. Marc Lalique (1900-1977) was born in Paris, the son of René Lalique and Alice Ledru and brother of Suzanne Lalique-Haviland. He was responsible for the move from glass to crystal in the early 1950s. After studying at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Marc Lalique joined his father in the family business in 1922. He was a highly skilled technician, and made frequent visits to the Wingen-sur-Moder factory to oversee new production techniques. On the death of his father in 1945, Marc took the helm. His technical bent and know-how led him to renovate and modernise the Wingen-sur-Moder factory, and Lalique rapidly became one of the finest crystal manufacturers not only in France but worldwide. The contrast between sheer transparency and satin sheen became Lalique’s hallmark, at home and abroad. Marc Lalique’s most famous pieces include the Angel glass, inspired by the Smiling Angel in Reims Cathedral, a reference to the Lalique family’s origins in the Champagne region, and the famous L'Air du Temps Nina Ricci perfume bottle...

20th Century Frosted Glass Sculpture Entitled "Standing Elephant" by Lalique
Located in London, GB
Impressive Mid-20th Century clear and frosted glass figural study of an African elephant with its trunk raised. The surface with fine detail, signed Lalique France Additional information Height: 15 cm Condition: Excellent Condition circa: 1970 Materials: Clear & Frosted Glass About Lalique Glass René Lalique (1860-1945) began his career as a jewellery apprentice at the age of 16, and by 1881 he was a freelance designer for many of the best-known Parisian jewellers. In 1885, he opened his own workshop on Place Gaillon in Paris, the former workshop of Jules Destape. In 1887, Lalique opened a business on Rue du Quatre-Septembre, and registered the "RL" mark the following year. In 1890, he opened a shop in the Opera District of Paris. Within a decade, Lalique was amongst the best-known Parisian jewellers. In 1905, Lalique opened a new shop at Place Vendôme which exhibited not only jewellery, but glass works as well. It was close to the shop of renowned perfumer François Coty; in 1907, Lalique began producing ornate perfume bottles for Coty. The production of glass objects began at his country villa in 1902, and continued there until at least 1912. The first Lalique glassworks opened in 1909 in a rented facility in Combs-la-Ville, which Lalique later purchased in 1913. In December 1912, Lalique hosted an exhibition of Lalique Glass—as his glass would come to be known—at the Place Vendôme shop. During the First World War, the glassworks produced mundane items in support of the war effort. In 1919, work began on a new production facility in Wingen-sur-Moder, which opened in 1921. From 1925-1931, Lalique produced 29 models of hood ornaments; a mermaid statuette first produced in 1920 was also later sold as a hood ornament. During the 1920s and 1930s, Lalique was amongst the world's most renowned glassmakers. René Lalique died in 1945. His son Marc Lalique took over the business, operating initially as "M.Lalique" and later as "Cristal Lalique...

Richard Hirsch Ceramic Altar Bowl with Blown Glass Ladle #5, 2007
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's Altar bowl with blown glass ladle #5 was assembled in 2007. It's wheel thrown and hand built clay with low fire slips and glazes, black glaze, enamel polychrome paint, raku green patina and hot blown glass. In the book "With Fire: Richard Hirsch, A Life Between Chance and Design" Scott Meyer said; "As Hirsch's work progressed over the years, it would be a mistake to portray these advances as chronological. In fact, items found provocative would be added to the roster of possibility. The vessel might change in character with the deep interior space of a mortar becoming the shallow concavity of a Japanese, stone Tsubi basin or natural geode form. The corresponding implement might change from bulbous pestle to delicate ladle, alluding to the ceremonial cleansing for participants in the Tea Ceremony. In this sense, the proximity of these objects to their implied ceremonial use was similar to that which traditional Raku bowls...

Belgian art and design, Michel Martens Postmodern Glass Sculpture
Located in Antwerp, BE
Belgium; 1970's; Glass sculpture; Postmodern art; Michel Martens, a large glass sculpture with several punctuation marks, colored, frosted, and sandblasted glass. Signed by the artist on the bottom right corner. Belgium artist Michel Martens is famous for his impressive glass art. He created this postmodern piece of art in the 1970s. Martens (1921-2006) was a respected designer of stained glass windows and had an impressive career creating stained glass windows for churches. His credo was 'light is my material, glass my medium'. Martens was an autodidact and first taught himself the technique of stained windows. He designed an impressive 7000 meters stained glass between 1947 and 1989 for churches and monasteries. From 1968 onwards, Martens started to lose the church as a main client and therefore started to develop a practice in which he worked with mirrors that were also suitable for the private sector and private homes. With his radical and modern approach to glass art, Martens became part of the Post-war Abstract Modernist movement. Using mirrored glass opened up new perspectives for Martens. He even started using industrial glass as well, for his so-called 'Crazy Mirrors...
