About the Item

Stunning handmade Danish mid-century modern stoneware vase by Kähler. Raw neck with warm ochre shiny crackle glaze on the top and belly. Manufactured in the small Danish town of Naestved in the 1950s. Signed and stamped under base. A beautiful example of the particular design of the renowned Kähler company. In excellent vintage condition. Denmark, 1950s. In 1839, German-born Herman J. Kähler opened a small pottery workshop in the town of Næstved on Southern Sealand in Denmark. When his sons Herman August and Carl Frederik take over production in 1875, things start to take off for the small business that would soon grow to become one of the largest Danish successes within the history of artistic pottery. Herman August Kähler participated in exhibitions around the world, creating interest with both retailers and museums. In 1917, his son Herman H.C. Kähler takes over the business and with him the brand returns to a more traditional pottery style inspired by Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement with a touch of nordic romanticism. In 1940, Nils and Herman Kähler take over from their father and they will become the last generation to shape the Kähler business. With Nils as the primary and passionate designer, the business flourishes and even after the family sell the business in 1974, the Kähler brand is still appreciated as one of Denmark's greatest ceramic successes.
