About the Item

Unique in the oeuvre of Pat and Covey Stewart, this footed vase features a total of six nude male figures, expressed in lovely tones of brown and ivory in a setting of misty gray and off-white, all bathing and enjoying the rocky setting of Laguna Beach in the 1950s. Unlike other Stewart boxes, vases and dishes, which were shaped in a mold before glazing and firing, this rounded vase with four feet was hand-shaped by Pat Stewart before being decorated with the bathing figures. The Stewarts worked in Laguna Beach, California from 1950-1952, exhibiting at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts and selling their ceramic wares to high-end gift shops and hotel shops across the nation. Pat Stewart, who did the decorating and glazing of "Bathers" pieces, liked to depict nude male figures along the rocky coast where he lived.
