About the Item

From the I Molati series in thick blown and ground glass with aventurine designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa. Limited edition of 99 copies. Signature and numbering engraved under the base. VeArt production. Numbered 15 of 99. Biography Protagonists of Italian design and culture of the 20th century, Tobia Scarpa (1935, son of the famous architect Carlo) and his wife Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) began their long collaboration in 1959, during Franco Albini's furnishing course, with the project of the Pigreco armchair. Both graduated from the IUAV in Venice in 1969, they shared dozens of famous projects, particularly in the furniture sector, establishing themselves as exponents "of an elegant and refined architecture and design both in the forms and in the choice of materials" (Treccani) . Without adhering to passing trends and fashions, but "rather pursuing an idea of a durable and correct product", Afra and Tobia Scarpa participated in the birth of the Flos company (1960), for which they later created numerous lamps (Fantasma, Biagio , Papillona, Pierrot). Many important clients (among others B&B, Cassina, Fabbian, Gavina, Stildomus, Veas); in their production of armchairs, chairs and sofas, the Coronado armchairs (1966) stand out, with the innovative use of polyurethane. In addition to the industrial product, the Scarpa couple's activity contributed significantly "to the new organization and representation needs of Veneto and Lombardy companies" (Cattaneo). Winners of the Compasso d'Oro in 1970, they also established a very important and continuous professional partnership with the Treviso company Benetton, for which they built the Paderno knitwear factory (1964), the Castrette di Villorba factories (1980 and 1993), the restoration and new functionality of Villa Spineda in Venegazzù (1999) and many sales points (activity also carried out for C&B, Geox, Unifor). The Scarpas have also designed numerous restorations in the Venetian environment, "seeking a synthesis between the continuous experimentation of innovative solutions and the in-depth knowledge of traditional construction techniques".
