Marcello Fantoni Sgraffito Jug Vase Raymor Italy Pottery Ceramic

About the Item

The vintage ceramic jug vase by Marcello Fantoni from the 1960s is an exceptional and artistic piece that exemplifies the mastery of Italian ceramics during that era. Marcello Fantoni was a renowned Italian ceramist and sculptor known for his innovative designs and unique artistic expressions. The vase's overall shape likely resembles that of a traditional jug, with a rounded body, a curving handle, and a narrow neck. Its form showcases Fantoni's keen eye for balance and proportion, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing and functional vessel. The striking black glaze covers the majority of the vase's surface, creating a sophisticated and timeless appeal. The glaze adds depth and a sense of mystery to the piece, enhancing the overall visual impact. A distinct red band encircles the body of the vase, providing a bold and vibrant contrast against the black glaze. This red accent adds a touch of drama and intensity to the design, drawing attention to the vase's unique shape and surface. The most captivating feature of this vase lies in its decoration, executed in the sgraffito technique—a process in which the artist incises designs or patterns into the unfired surface of the clay, revealing the underlying layer. In this case, the body of the vase is adorned with incised abstract figures of people, each carefully etched into the clay with precision and skill. The sgraffito technique allows for intricate detailing and a sense of movement in the artwork, creating a dynamic and engaging visual narrative. The abstract nature of the figures adds an element of intrigue and open interpretation to the vase's design, inviting viewers to contemplate the meaning behind the artistic expressions. As a vintage piece dating back to the 1960s, this ceramic jug vase by Marcello Fantoni represents not only the artistic trends of that time but also the timeless appeal of handmade ceramics crafted with passion and creativity. This vase would be a remarkable addition to any art collection, showcasing the brilliance of Marcello Fantoni's talent and the enduring beauty of Italian ceramic artistry. Its combination of bold glazing, rich red accents, and intricate sgraffito decoration creates a masterpiece that stands as a testament to the artistry and innovation of its creator.

He continued years of training in ceramics and the arts, including sculpture with Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti, and figurative art with Gianni Vagnetti, graduating as a maestro of art in 1934. By the start of World War II Fantoni’s melding of ancient Italian pottery techniques with decidedly Modernist elements had won him artistic and commercial success both in Italy and abroad. Having participated in the resistance, after the War Fantoni worked for the 500-year old Maiolica factory in Deruta, Umbria, renowned for its signature tin-glazed pottery.
