About the Item

Ball vase by Bitossi Ceramiche, "Rimini Blu" collection, made by Aldo Londi in the 1950s Ø cm 22 h cm 22 Aldo Londi (1911-2003) was a key figure in 20th-century Italian ceramics and his name is inextricably linked to Bitossi Ceramiche. He devoted more than fifty years of his life to the company, first as art director and then as a key collaborator, transforming Bitossi into a globally recognized name in modern design ceramics. Born in Montelupo Fiorentino, an area with a deep-rooted ceramic tradition, Londi began working with ceramics at the young age of 11. This early immersion in craftsmanship, combined with his natural artistic sensibility and tireless drive for experimentation, allowed him to develop a unique and expressive ceramic language. After serving as a prisoner of war in South Africa during World War II, Londi returned to Italy and, in 1946, was appointed Artistic Director of the Cav. G. Bitossi & Sons. This marked the beginning of a legendary collaboration that would last more than half a century. Under Londi's direction, Bitossi underwent a significant transformation, moving from more traditional production to embracing modern design. His expertise and willingness to experiment with new materials, techniques and colors were instrumental in this evolution. He is credited with designing more than 1,000 objects for Bitossi, ranging from vases and pitchers to clocks and cute animal figurines. Many of his creations are still in production today and are highly sought after by collectors. Aldo Londi's most famous and enduring contribution to Bitossi is undoubtedly the Rimini Blu collection, produced continuously since 1959. This iconic series is instantly recognizable by several key features: the pieces feature rich, multilayered blue and turquoise enameling that often evokes the play of light on the surface of the sea. The surface of the ceramics is decorated with intricate hand-etched patterns and marks. These abstract-geometric elements create a whimsical and tactile texture. The collection includes a wide range of forms, including vases of various shapes (ball, spool, two-piece), bowls, ashtrays, umbrella stands, and a beloved series of animal figures (cats, horses, birds, rams, bulls, fish). The name "Rimini Blue" is said to pay homage to the Riviera Romagnola, a popular tourist destination.
