About the Item

The nostalgic and joyful decor of the vintage Christmas Magic collection by Vista Alegre was Inspired by Victorian toys from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Each coaster features a distincs motif that is not repeated, with all 6 motifs of the collection constituting a full set. Toy soldiers, trains, carriages, horns, and even a rocking horse create an unmistakable, characteristic seasonal holiday mood. Bright, cheerful, playful decor stands up against crisp white background; plain red band on rims frames the coaster, grounding the composition, and small raised foot on the base adds the convenience of easy handling. The Christmas Magic collection was created in 1980s and is still current, but the coasters were retired; they are not available on Vista Allegre website, making the full set a rare find. The coasters measure xx" in diameter; they are clearly marked on the bottoms. The classic shape, high quality craftsmanship, detailed design, and historical inspiration make them a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Modern Country, Eclectic, Transitional, Organic Modern, Grand Millennial, Collected, or Contemporary. Vista Alegre is an iconic Portuguese porcelain and fine china producer, founded in 1824. Regular porcelain production between 1832 and 1840 led to significant improvements in the quality of porcelain and glass. In 1851, Vista Alegre participated in the Universal Exhibition at Crystal Palace, in London. In 1867, the company achieved international recognition at the Paris Universal Exhibition. In 1852, a complete dinner set was produced for the Royal House of Portugal. Beginning of 20th century was characterized by industrial development and business growth, accompanied by an artistic revival and adaptation of modern styles, such as Art Deco and Functionalism. Between late 1940s and 1970s the company increased exports and expanded its business to new markets. A tradition of producing exclusive pieces was started, of which a dinner set produced for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a prime example. Collaboration with contemporary artists also became increasingly frequent. Vista Alegre pieces were displayed in relevant international exhibitions, at locations such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Royal Palace of Milan. In May 2001, a merger between the Vista Alegre Group and the Atlantis Group brought glassware and crystal back to the company and resulted in the largest tableware group in Portugal and the sixth largest group in the world within this sector, the Vista Alegre Group (VAA Group).
