Bitossi Italy Ceramic and Glass Mosaic Centerpiece Bowl Catchall, circa 1960

About the Item

This stunning Bitossi ceramic centerpiece or vide poche is a rare treasure of Italian earthenware mastery, imported to the United States by Raymor of New York. Created in Italy circa 1960, its design is attributed to the legendary Italian ceramicist Aldo Londi, making it a highly collectible and sought-after piece. With its bold yet refined aesthetic, this remarkable bowl features a generously sized, low-edge form—perfect as a centerpiece, catchall tray, or decor bowl. The off-white glazed surface serves as a striking canvas for the mesmerizing multicolored abstract pattern, composed of fused glass, known as "fritte." Rich mid-century modern hues of turquoise blue, cobalt blue, yellow, chocolate brown, and red rust intermingle in a dazzling display of depth and vibrancy. Marked on the underside with "Italy" and its model number, this extraordinary piece is not merely decorative—it embodies timeless artistry, bringing a touch of sophistication and heritage to any interior. Dimensions: 10.63 in wide (27 cm) by 7.07 in deep (18 cm) by 1.75 in high (4.5 cm). Note: Bitossi stands as a pillar of Italian earthenware, with a legacy that traces back to the late nineteenth century in Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany—an area renowned for its rich ceramic traditions. This esteemed factory has remained in the same location since 1921, proudly carried forward by five generations of family dedication. Recognized for its historical significance, Bitossi was officially added to the Register of Italian Historic Companies in 2014, cementing its status as an icon of Italian excellence. While its early production adhered to traditional regional styles, by the late 1940s, Bitossi evolved into a prominent leader in ceramic artistry, creating bold, distinctive works that continue to define the prestige of the Made in Italy craftsmanship. Note: Aldo Londi (1911 - 2003) Born in 1911 in Montelupo Fiorentino, Aldo Londi devoted his life to art, working as a painter, sculptor, and, above all, a ceramicist. For over fifty years, he collaborated with Bitossi, first as artistic director and later as a contributor. His expertise in ceramics and artistic sensitivity were his defining traits. Combined with a natural inclination for exploration, they allowed him to undertake bold experiments and shape a new expressive language.
