More about Accolay pottery:
Under the term Poterie d'Accolay or Accolay pottery, we group together the production of a community of potters settled in the village of Accolay, in the department of Yonne. This production center was created by four former students of Alexander Kostanda.
Active from 1945-1983, their pottery is distinguished by a great technical inventiveness and an extremely abundant production. The pottery community exploited the proximity of the National 6 (can be compared to Route 66 in the USA) by investing in the service stations to make permanent exhibition places on the circuit of migration of Parisian tourists. Their exhibition buildings, inspired by the construction of the 24h circuit of Le Mans, became the obligatory stage for holiday makers in transit. The National 6 joins the 7 known as the sun route.
This form of marketing continued at the entrance to Vermenton until the closure of factories in 1983. The creation of the Lyon motorway had however for several years derived the flow of tourists.
The forefather Alexandre Kostanda (Dec 1921 - Nov 2007) was born in Poland of Russian parents. The family emigrated to Lorraine in France, where his mother Irene worked as a decorator in a porcelain factory. They then moved to Vallauris, where his mother worked at Louis Giraud's workshop. Alexandre joined the company as an apprentice from 1936-1938. After the war he taught pottery at the Longchamps Pottery...

Stylish Pair Graduated Brown Glazed Studio Pottery Moon Vases
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
A very well made and stylish pair graduated studio pottery moon vases believed to date from the 20th century and probably originating from the UK. The stoneware vases are lightly potted standing on flat narrow oval shaped bases and both are hand crafted in narrow round moon shape with short narrow funnel necks and slighted everted thicker opening. The vases are decorated in splashed tenmoku brown glazes on a red brown glazed ground with a linear pattern running diagonally across the bodies. Both vases have impressed marks which we have been unable to identify, one with a series of collectors paper labels suggesting possible makers. However we have been unable to verify any of these.
The dimensions provided are for the larger vase and the smaller example measures: height 16 cm, width 12.5 cm and depth 4.5 cm. Absolutely stunning display pieces...

Staffordshire Potteries English Tray with Blue Transferware Decorations
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects.
Lovely and refined English oval ceramic tray; elegant and rich blue decorations have been executed on the white background using the transferware method; the mark on the back tells us exactly that the object was produced by the Clementson Brothers LTD Company between 1901 and 1913 at the Phoenix factory in Shelton, the company made a wide range of objects with this decoration called "Delf" ( see mark no.909 p.150 of "Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Mark"). Transferware, which was very fashionable in the Victorian period, refers to glazed and decorated pottery with a specific treatment that they produced in Staffordshire, England; they used copper plates on which the design was engraved, the plate was then inked and the design transferred to a special fabric that was later placed on the pottery (plates, trays, tureens, etc.) which was glazed and fired; the first to use this printing process were John Sadler and Guy Green of Liverpool in 1756. If we look at the pottery made by this method we will notice that the designs are not perfect and often the ink is smudged: this is their characteristic. A hand-painted plate service could afford few English families, with this method even middle-class families could have a decorated plate service. The Clementson Firm was founded in 1839 by Joseph Clementson, who retired from the business in 1867, leaving the factory to his four sons and son...
