Daum white wine glass, Art Nouveau period, Nancy manufacture, circa 1900
By Daum
Located in Paris, FR
This emerald green-tinted blown glass wine glass exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Daum manufactory in Nancy around 1900. Its ribbed design lends a subtly animated texture, while delicate gold highlights - applied using the combed decoration technique - gracefully accent the rim and base. This model closely resembles the renowned Gui glassware service designed by Edmond Lachenal (1855 - c.1955), an esteemed ceramicist and painter. For this commission, Lachenal collaborated with the Daum glassworks and the Keller & Guérin manufactory in Lunéville for the faience components. This iconic Art Nouveau service is now housed in the Musée d’Orsay, following a donation by dealer Rispal in 2005. For collectors or hosts seeking a complete set, we also offer matching pieces: champagne coupes...

3 Bohemian Aperitif Glasses, 1880s, France, Crystal Glass
Located in Greven, DE
A beautiful set of three aperitif glasses in green, turqouise and blue. In 19th century France, the art of glassmaking experienced a renaissance inspired by the rich history and heritage of ancient techniques. Antique glasses from this era are not only masterpieces of craftsmanship, but also important cultural artefacts that reflect the aesthetics and lifestyle of the time. Glassmaking in France had a long tradition dating back to Roman times. During the 19th century, French glass art experienced a revival, fuelled by technological advances and a growing demand for ornate objects for the home. A notable feature of antique glass from the 19th century is its variety of styles and techniques. French glassmakers mastered a wide range of techniques, including blowing, moulding, cutting, engraving and painting glass. These skills were utilised to produce a variety of glassware, from opulent crystal vases to delicate drinking glasses. Glasses also played an important role in the social and cultural circles of 19th century France. They were often used at festive occasions such as banquets, receptions and balls and were seen as symbols of status and taste. The art of glassmaking became a prestigious craft practised by talented artists and craftsmen. Today, antique 19th century glassware...

Antique, New and Vintage Glass

Whether you’re seeking glass dinner plates, centerpieces, platters and serveware or other items to elevate the dining experience or brighten the corners of your living room, bedroom or other spaces by displaying decorative pieces, find an extraordinary range of antique, new and vintage glass on 1stDibs.

Glassmaking is more than 4,000 years old. It is believed to have originated in Northern Mesopotamia, where carved glass objects were the result of a series of experiments led by potters or metalworkers. From there, the production of glass vases, bottles and other objects proliferated in Egypt under the reign of Thutmose III. Later, new glassmaking techniques took shape during the Hellenistic era, and glassblowing was invented in contemporary Israel. Then, on the island of Murano in Venice, Italy, modern art glass as we know it came to be.

Over the years, collectors of glass decorative objects or serveware have sought out distinctive antique and vintage pieces of the mid-century modern, Art Deco and Art Nouveau eras, with artisans such as Archimede Seguso, René Lalique and Émile Gallé of particular interest for the pioneering contributions they made to the respective styles in which they worked. Today, long-standing glassworks such as Barovier&Toso carry on the Venetian glasswork tradition, while modern furniture designers and sculptors such as Christophe Côme and Jeff Zimmerman elsewhere test the limits of the radical art form that is glassmaking.

From chandeliers to Luminarc stemware, find a collection of antique, new and vintage glass on 1stDibs.
