Bohemian Loetz Art Nouveau Cobalt Papillon Glass Vase c1898

About the Item

A fabulous Art Nouveau Cobalt (blue/gold on vibrant dark blue) Papillon (Butterfly wing) vase. This iridised finish was first created by Loetz in 1898 and dates to around that period. The vase is almost cylinder shape with a small flare to the top and a bulbus base. It has a cold cut top and no pontil mark -quite usual for this kind of design Papillon was made in candia, crete, cobalt, dark blue, opal, orange, ruby or yellow ground, each marvered with silvery-yellow (oil spot) granules. The vibrant cobalt blue colouring, as in this example, is one of the most pleasing colours. Loetz was and still is probably the most famous and most collected of the great Bohemian glass makers.
