About the Item

A rare and unusual Doulton Lambeth Art Pottery jug carved and decorated in relief with trailing fruiting vines by renowned and gifted modeler, designer and decorator Mark V Marshall and believed to date from around 1880. This unique jug stands on a narrow round unglazed foot with a slightly recessed base and has a round bulbous body with a pinched neck with a flared crimped rim and pouring spout with a loop stalk handle applied to the side. The jug is finely carved in relief with a trailing and fruiting grape vine hand painted in tones of blue, brown, green and yellow against a mottled green ground. The neck in grey glazes over splashed with green and brown glazes with brown glazes applied to the handle and foot-rim. The jug has an early incised Doulton Lambeth mark including the initials E.B. (possibly an exhibition piece). The jug also bears an incised number 199 along with an MVM mark and unusually also has a further M.V.M mark below the handle and applied in white. Provenance: From the Ann Turner Collection of Doulton Pottery acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
