Meissen Candlestick Figurine 'Lighter - Florian' by Silvia Kloede, 1996

About the Item

A slender young, strong man standing by a rock, his light gray breeches and fiery red bodice tapering at the back like a lambent flame, decorated with fine, intricate floral motifs and rich gilding, his fiery red hair arranged upwards in three strands and decorated with foliage, balancing a wide bowl on top, which also serves as the eaves cup of a candlestick. The figure rests on a round natural base and is additionally supported on the front by a bundle of plants. The figure was created in reference to the medieval legend of St. Florian of Lorch, who in his deep faith was able to escape being burned to death and is still revered today as the patron saint of firefighters, and is intended as a counterpart to 'Lighter - Melusine', another mythical legendary figure from the Middle Ages, who is usually depicted as a water fairy with a serpent's body.
