DATING: made during PFEIFFER PERIOD (1924 - 34) MATERIAL: white porcelain, glossy finish, finest painting TECHNIQUE: handmade porcelain DESIGNER: JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER (1706 - 1775) / he was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory as from 1742 until the year 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. KAENDLER DESIGNED THIS FIGURINE GROUP (MODEL 250) CIRCA 1741. SUBJECT: COUPLE MAKING MUSIC SCARAMUZ AND COLOMBINE Both figurines - a most elegant lady clad in crinoline, further wearing a mantle as well as a stocking cap, and Scaramuz * playing a lute - are very busy with making music: He - touching the lute's strings - glances at the book with music notes which is held in lady's hands / she seems to do an animated discussion, raising her right arm in affective manner ... It is a LOVELY COUPLE, indeed ! * Scaramuz is a funny figurine of Italian folk / popular theatre Commedia dell’arte. - The word derives from Italian term Scaramuccia, called Scaramuzzo, too, and means 'skirmish' - referring most probably to a sparring match. This figurine is called 'Scaramouche' in French language / 'Scaramouch' is known as loudmouth / big mouth in English language. - Skaramuz is clad in black garments, being dressed in Spanish style. He is the type of Italian adventurer as well as boaster / swaggerer deriving from Naples (Italy). - Skaramuz is very often whacked by Arlecchino at end of story in tradition of Commedia dell'Arte. [= WIKIPEDIA] The figurine group is attached to oblong rocky base (its front side is covered with lady's crinoline / the backside is decorated with sculptured flowers' blossoms). Lovely appearance as well as excellent Meissen quality, delicate finest painting, superb modelling. This charming pair of Meissen porcelain figures celebrates the essence of Revelry. First modeled by the renowned Johann Joachim Kändler on bases by Peter Reinicke, circa 1767, these joyous groups depict musicians making merry by playing the French horn, flute, guitar and hurdy-gurdy, and gardeners carrying flowers in baskets and aprons. Two almost identical groups are featured in Meissen: Collector’s Catalogue by Laurence Mitchell. Figures by Kändler were especially popular and served as table decorations at courtly banquets. He took the reigns of the Meissen factory in 1733 and over the following 40 years created more than 900 models, many of which were considered the most important and beautiful ever produced. Many of his designs were so timeless and classic that they continued to be used well into the 19th century.
