About the Item

A Pair of 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Blue and White Hide and Seek Centerpieces. The baskets are oval with pierced rocaille-style scrollwork along the rim, extending outward at four points. The exterior is decorated with molded relief details, highlighted in cobalt blue. The interior features a lattice-patterned base. Each pedestal is cylindrical with vertical fluting, transitioning into an upper section adorned with applied foliate elements in cobalt blue. The pedestals are supported by circular bases with raised scroll motifs and wave-like patterns, also highlighted in blue. The underside are marked with Meissen Underglaze Blue Crossed Swords Mark. Figures of a man and a woman in 18th-century attire are applied to each pedestal. The figures are modeled in high relief, positioned on opposite sides, and appear engaged in a game of hide and seek around the central column. The male figures wear knee-length coats with floral patterns, breeches, and heeled shoes with buckles. The female figures are dressed in floral-patterned gowns with corseted bodices and draped skirts. Their facial features and clothing details are hand-painted with subtle polychrome accents. Germany, Circa: 1880
