Staffordshire Georgian Two Pearlware Religious Printed Childs Plates with Verse
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
Two fine English Georgian, probably Staffordshire, child’s pearlware plates decorated with religious scenes and verse dating from the early 19th century. The finely potted plates are of octagonal shape both with relief molded fruit and floral designs to the rim, one hand painted and other simply glazed rim but with a pink lustre edge. Due to the edge patterning being the same we believe the plates to have originated from the same pottery. Both plates have printed religious scenes to the center with printed prayers, possibly as teaching aids for children. One has a scene of Christ rising from the dead with a prayer reading ‘Behold him rising from the grave. Behold him raised on high. He pleads his merit there to save Transgressor doom’d to die.’ The scene shows soldiers, some sleeping around the entrance to the tomb. The second plate shows a child reading...

Early Spode Red Greek Pattern Tile
Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
A Neoclassical red transferware tile made by Spode 1806-1810, with the ‘Refreshments for Phliasian Horseman’ pattern. Sir William Hamilton’s Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities, first published in 1766 by Pierre d’Hancarville, was a landmark publication in English design. It intended to disseminate the Antique style through its engravings of Attic pottery. The catalog’s faithful reproductions of Classical vases led British potteries, including Spode, to adapt or even copy the ancient art for modern life. These Spode Greek pattern tiles reflect the major influence of Hamilton’s catalog on English Neoclassicism. The central scene was taken directly from the catalog. This tile can be dated to a narrow window of production in the Spode factory, 1806-1810. During that time, Spode used a technique known as the “Pluck and Dust” method to print in red transfer designs onto creamware. Using this method, source prints were transferred overglaze using tissue imprinted with a very faint rendition of the design outlined in sticky oil. The decorator applied the tissue to the object then carefully “plucked” or pulled it away, leaving the sticky oil design behind. Then, a finely-ground enamel color was “dusted” onto the surface, sticking to any areas that had the oil. A final firing at a low temperature in the enamel kiln made the pattern permanent. The Pluck and Dust technique improved upon bat-printing and enabled larger designers to be transferred. It was short-lived, however, as under-glaze transfer printing soon took over as the preferred method for producing transferwares. Dimensions: 5 in. x 5 in. x 1/4 in. Condition: Excellent. Slight chip to the upper left corner measuring approximately 0.9 cm. in length. Provenance: The Collection of Nancy and Andrew Ramage Jonathan Horne...

Large Scale Staffordshire Pearlware Figure of Ceres or Plenty
Located in Downingtown, PA
Massive Staffordshire Pearlware Pottery Figure of Ceres or Plenty, circa 1815 This large scale figure of Ceres or Plenty is a stunning example of Staffordshire pottery. The figure is finely modeled and enamelled in colors, and she stands on a wonderfully decorated marbled plinth. Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture, fertility, and motherhood, and she is often depicted holding a flaming torch and a cornucopia. The figure wears a striking yellow robe over a light purple dress decorated with black flowers. In her left hand she holds a flaming torch while in the right she holds a large cornucopia...

Antique, New and Vintage Pottery

Even if you’re (understandably) boastful of your minimalist loft apartment or breezy California coastal-style decor, your space could probably still use some streamlined antique and vintage pottery, which can prove both timeless and on-trend.

Pottery, which sees clay and other ceramic materials fired at high temperatures in order to lend them a durable and robust form, can introduce color and character to your dining room or living room. Pottery includes stoneware, porcelain and earthenware and, depending upon a piece’s origins, can vary considerably in style, form and function from one vessel to another. This makes it easy to find pottery for your interiors or outdoor garden areas, regardless of color scheme or design style.

“Ceramics are definitely seeing a resurgence in the decorating and art worlds,” says the team of Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone of interior design firm Consort. The personalization of handmade craftsmanship has served as a sort of anti-Internet to screen-weary decorators.

The rustic appearance of some mid-century-era Mexican pottery, such as a jug or water pitcher, can add earthy charm to your breakfast table while hand-painted antique Japanese pottery, such as a planter for your patio, might be characterized by rich colors and exquisitely detailed landscape scenes.

On 1stDibs, find a wide range of antique, new and vintage pottery with origins in countries all over the world. Our collection includes vases, vessels and other tableware from France, Italy and China as well as contemporary pottery and pieces that date from the 18th century and earlier.
