Savary - 277pc. Antique French Sterling Silver Flatware Set, 26 Serving Pieces.
By Savary Paris 1
Located in Wilmington, DE
Direct from a Private Chateau Outside of Paris, A Stunning 277pc. 950 Sterling Silver Flatware Set by International Known French Silversmiths "Savary" with Original 6-Drawer Storage Cabinet and an Awesome Assortment of 26 Serving Pieces, Excellent Condition - circa 1890s. The world of silver-smithing has a rich history, and numerous firms have left their indelible mark on the craft. Among these, the French silversmith firm "Savary" stands as a paragon of excellence. The Savary silversmith firm was founded in Paris in 1780 by Louis-François Savary, an artisan with a profound passion for silver craftsmanship. In a time when the art of silversmithing was thriving in France, Savary's innate talent and dedication set the stage for what would become a legacy of excellence. As the 18th century transitioned into the 19th century, the Savary firm began to focus on producing high-quality silverware. This transition marked a pivotal moment in the firm's history, as it aligned with the changing tastes and demands of French aristocracy and an emerging bourgeois class. Savary's enduring success can be attributed to several key accomplishments, which have solidified its status as a distinguished silversmith firm - exceptional craftsmanship, innovation in design, royal patronage and collaboration with renowned artists. From its inception, Savary exhibited exceptional craftsmanship that was the envy of its contemporaries. The firm's artisans were known for their skillful use of traditional silversmith techniques, producing pieces with intricate designs and exceptional quality. Savary's pieces were not just functional; they were works of art, representing the epitome of French silversmithing. One of Savary's crowning achievements was gaining the favor of French royalty. Louis-François Savary's exceptional craftsmanship and reputation as a master silversmith earned him the patronage of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The royal family commissioned several exquisite silverware pieces, showcasing Savary's extraordinary talent and solidifying the firm's position as a preeminent silversmith. In addition to royal patronage, Savary collaborated with some of the era's most celebrated artists. The firm partnered with Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot, a prominent French silversmith, to create a series of exceptional silver pieces that combined Odiot's design prowess with Savary's craftsmanship. The Savary firm's commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed. It received several awards and honors that underscored its importance in the world of silversmithing. The Exposition Universelle, held in Paris in 1855, was a global showcase of art and industry. Savary's work, including their innovative silverware designs, earned them a prestigious Gold Medal. This recognition solidified the firm's international reputation as a leading silversmith. Savary's silverware, characterized by exceptional craftsmanship and innovative design, left an indelible mark on the world of silversmithing. The firm's legacy endures in the form of treasured silverware pieces that continue to captivate connoisseurs and collectors alike. The story of Savary is not just a tale of a silversmith firm but a testament to the enduring artistry and excellence of French craftsmanship in the realm of silver. This magnificent set is an exemplary testament to the quality and luxury enjoyed by 19th century European elite. This set is in extremely good condition. Vintage, New and Antique Sterling Silver

Dining and entertaining changed drastically when we began to set our tables with sterling silver for holiday gatherings, wedding receptions, engagement parties and, in some of today’s homes, everyday meals.

Often called the “Queen of metals,” silver has been universally adored for thousands of years. It is easy to see why it has always been sought after: It is durable, strong and beautiful. (Louis XIV had tables made entirely of silver.) Sterling silver is an alloy that is made of 92.5 percent silver — the “925” stamp that identifies sterling-silver jewelry refers to this number. The other 7.5 percent in sterling silver is typically sourced from copper.

Neoclassical-style sterling-silver goods in Europe gained popularity in the late 18th century — a taste for sterling-silver tableware as well as tea sets had taken shape — while in the United States, beginning in the 19th century, preparing the dinner table with sterling-silver flatware had become somewhat of a standard practice. Indeed, owning lots of silver goods during the Victorian era was a big deal. Back then, displaying fine silver at home was a status symbol for middle-class American families. And this domestic silver craze meant great profitability for legendary silversmith manufacturers such as Reed & Barton, Gorham Manufacturing Company and the International Silver Company, which was incorporated in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1898, a major hub of silver manufacturing nicknamed “Silver City.”

Today, special occasions might call for ceremonial silver designed by Tiffany & Co. or the seductive sterling-silver cutlery from remarkable Danish silversmith Georg Jensen, but there really doesn’t have to be an event on the calendar to trot out your finest tableware.

Event- and wedding-planning company maestro Tara Guérard says that some “investment pieces,” such as this widely enamored alloy, should see everyday use, and we’re inclined to agree.

“Sterling-silver flatware is a must-have that you can use every single day, even to eat cereal,” she says. “Personally, I want a sterling-silver goblet set for 12 to 20; I would use them every time I had a dinner party. Ultimately, there are no criteria for buying vintage pieces: Buy what you love, and make it work.”
