About the Item

Tiffany & Co. Aesthetic Movement Sterling Silver Match Safe with Raindrop–Shagreen Surface, circa 1884 Description: A refined and sculptural example of American Aesthetic silver design, this sterling silver match safe (vesta case) was made by Tiffany & Co., circa 1884, during the tenure of Charles T. Cook as head of silver production. Compact yet exquisitely executed, the piece measures 2.25 inches high by 1.5 inches wide and 0.5 inches deep and weighs 34 grams. The case is fully adorned with a surface of domed circular bosses—a rich, tactile pattern that evokes both falling raindrops and natural shagreen, an exotic material prized in European and Japanese decorative arts. This surface treatment likely combines chasing and punchwork techniques, imitating the irregular grain of shagreen while translated through the gleam of sterling silver. An uninscribed oval cartouche on one side offers a pause in the texture, creating compositional balance. The bottom edge of the case, where matches were struck, features a finely executed engine-turned swirl pattern, recalling Roman decorative stonework or labyrinthine designs. The striated surface serves as both a striking area and an ornamental base—an embodiment of the Aesthetic Movement’s insistence on beauty in function. The hinged lid opens and closes with precision, a hallmark of Tiffany’s silver engineering. While the case bears the “C” mark for Charles T. Cook, who oversaw Tiffany’s silver department from 1892 to 1902, its design bears the distinct hallmarks of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s emerging artistic influence. During this transitional period, LCT—having recently assumed the role of artistic director of the firm—was known to advocate for exotic textures, naturalistic motifs, and Japanese-inspired surface design. Though not formally signed, the abstraction, asymmetry, and translation of organic materials into precious metal strongly suggest that the design was shaped by LCT’s aesthetic vision, if not his direct hand. Cultural Context: This vesta would have belonged to an urbane gentleman of refined taste, someone who valued both utility and understated luxury. Likely carried in a waistcoat or trouser pocket, it served not only to protect wooden friction matches but to convey a quiet elegance. Such an object might have lit gas lamps, candles, or cigars in a club, parlor, or study—its presence speaking volumes about the owner’s sensibility. In this way, it is both a functional tool and an intimate expression of cultivated masculinity in the Gilded Age. Materials: Sterling silver (.925), hand-finished Techniques: Hand-chased, punch-decorated, engine-turned striking surface, fabricated hinged construction Dimensions: Height: 2.25 in. Width: 1.5 in.
