Tiffany & Co. Mixed Metal and Sterling Silver 1870s Pitcher in Japonesque Style

About the Item

Rare Tiffany & Co. hand-hammered sterling silver and mixed metal pitcher in Japonesque style from the early 1870s, designed by Edward C. Moore. Beautifully hand-hammered, it displays Japonesque style motifs, including mokume, applied dragonfly, and butterfly motifs, made of copper and gold. It measures 7'' in height by 7'' in depth, weighs 25 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. It is possible that this pitcher was presented at the prestigious World's Fair of Paris in 1878, given its French silver import marks and the fact that the date on the bottom is written in French (23 Avril 1863). Deemed a major success for the firm, the blockbuster exhibition was especially praised for the display of works in the Japonisme taste with mixed metal decoration such as seen here. Edward C. Moore himself received a medal of honor for his works shown at the exposition, and Tiffany further received the Grand Prix for silverware, a gold medal for jewelry, and six further medals. According to Charles Carpenter in his book "Tiffany Silver" (1997), the "list of buyers [at the World's Fair] was a veritable Who's Who ranging from the Prince of Wales, Baron Gustav de Rothschild, the Japanese government to museums in Vienna, Berlin, Stuttgart, and Dublin." In fact, he mentions that one of the pieces sold was the Mentmore cream pitcher, which shows remarkable similarities to our pitcher in the application of Japanese inspired natural motifs on a hammered surface. The Mentmore pitcher was purchased as a wedding gift for Hannah Rothschild and the fifth Earl of Roseberry, which was "one of the great social events of 1878." Our pitcher is a rare example of Tiffany silver in the Japonesque style. It demonstrates Tiffany's use of mokume in their works of the late 19th century. The process, inspired by Japanese techniques, consists of hammering soldered layers of silver, copper, brass, and Japanese gold alloys to create a unique material resembling woodgrain. It presents numerous similarities with other pieces made by Tiffany & Co. in the 1870s and 1880s. Notably, a Tiffany & Co. pitcher in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum displays a similar applied dragonfly (Brooklyn Museum, H. Randolph Lever Fund, 82.18). Also, in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Tiffany & Co. vase (Purchase, Mr. and Mrs. H. O. H. Frelinghuysen Gift, 1982) shows grass motifs in relief atop another motif (in that case, a fish). Our pitcher presents a similar design between the belly and the upper neck. The Newark Museum of Art holds in its permanent collection a teapot with similar hammering style, also displaying a butterfly and other natural motifs (Purchase, 2005.6). The Dallas Museum of Art also has a punch bowl with similar hammering, dragonfly, and grass motifs (1982.84). Many of the pieces mentioned above were exhibited in the landmark exhibition "Collecting Inspiration: Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co." held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2024. The legendary Tiffany brand was founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in Connecticut as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium," with the help of Charles Tiffany's father who financed the store for only $1,000 with profits from a cotton mill. Tiffany & Co. soon became a highly regarded brand for jewelry, gemstones, and silver. In 1845, Tiffany was a pioneer when it launched the Blue Book, which at the time was the first mail-order catalog to be distributed in the US. In 1878, Tiffany won the gold medal for jewelry and a grand prize for silverware at the Paris World Fair Exposition. The luxury brand’s enduring legacy remains vibrant to this day.
