"Hall's Excelsior" Cast Iron Mechanical Toy Savings Bank. American, Circa 1869

About the Item

"Hall's Excelsior" mechanical bank (as this is referred to) is recognized as the first example of a manufactured mechanical bank; having been made by the J. & E. Steven's Company of Cromwell, Connecticut in 1869; and designed by John D. Hall. It is made of cast iron with a wooden cashier monkey and desk interior. It came in a variety of color variations, this tan version is probably the most rare. The bank is in very good and all original condition (especially after 150 years), which is quite unusual for this bank as the wooden desk and monkey cashier are more often than not, replacements. Although "Halls Excelsior" enjoyed widespread production and a long term popularity (1869 to say 1877), and being quite ubiquitous as regards existing examples, completely original examples are few and far between; especially as regards the wooden monkey cashier and desk in front of him. The bank is in all original paint and there is no restoration. I have examined with a black light and loop and the paint reflects original rendition period paint. This example is also one of the first "Hall's Excelsior's" to be made, evidenced by the fact that there is no provision for removing the coins other than taking it apart via the round nut and screw on the underneath. This would have made this bank even more rare as putting the bank back together can be quite challenging----especially for a child. Later examples provided a coin trap receptacle To operate: gently pull on the glass knob in front which is attached to a string as the lid pops up and exposes the monkey cashier sitting in front of a desk; place a penny on the desk top and release the knob as the coin is deposited into the bank (see operational video which accompanies the listing). "Hall's Excelsior" mechanical bank is a great addition to an antique toy or bank collection; or for someone who simply wants a representative folk art piece of Americana. Dimensions: 4" deep x 4" wide x 5" high (3 5/8" base plate front of steps to back) I am a leading specialist in the field of antique mechanical coin banks, having been buying, selling, and examining these fine objects for 40 years. "Cat Boat" Mechanical Toy Penny Bank, American, circa 1968
By Utexiqual Products
Located in Incline Village, NV
In near mint and all original condition this vintage mechanical bank appeals to both sailing enthusiasts and bank collectors; perhaps a collector of "cat" memorabelia as well. The theme depicts two sailors riding their boat in full sail. It is quite substantial in both size and weight. To operate, (with the lever pushed all the way in from the left); place a coin vertically above the left arm of the sailor in red; from the right; push the lever all the way in. The sail and Boom hits the sailor, knocking him over as the coin drops into the bank. The other sailor moves forward while manning the tiller. The bank is named "Cat Boat...

American Mechanical Bank "Melody-Bank, " circa 1946
Located in Incline Village, NV
"Melody-Bank" is a rare bank and was manufactured by "Electric Coding Machine Co., N.Y.C." in 1946. American made, this is a genuine and authentic vintage mechanical bank, albeit somewhat later, having been manufactured in 1946. It maintains all of the elements of a collectible antique mechanical bank; pleasing shelf appeal and wonderful musical action. The metal faux textured, green painted casing on five sides is fronted by cardboard on wood, filled with delightful images of "children at play with money" lithography. To operate: Wind up the mechanism by turning the brass dial in front clockwise; then put a nickel, dime, or quarter in the appropriate slot at the top. Music will play as additional lithography depicting children's nursery rhymes rotate on the interior circular dial ("Little Boy Blue", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", etc.). Coins are removed by unscrewing the metal plate at the rear bottom. Bank is in excellent all original condition with fully operable musical mechanism. Dimensions: 7" high x 4 9/16" wide x 3" deep. Mechanical Bank "Pelican, " Made of Cast Iron, circa 1878
By John Gerrard
Located in Incline Village, NV
The Pelican Mechanical Bank is made of cast iron and was manufactured by The J. & E. Steven's Manufacturing Company, in Cromwell, Connecticut in 1878. It was, however, created by John Gerard of the Trenton Lock & Hardware Company in Trenton, New Jersey. This is probably the best example I've had for sale and is in excellent all original condition and paint. Often times the top beak of the pelican is replaced or repaired this example has the original beak. There were several variations made of the figure in the pelican's mouth. This is the "mammy" example. The bank was finished in both a gold and a dark...
