With early 20th century light fixtures being one of our specialities, finding a unique Arts and Crafts pendant always makes our heart jump. Every designer knows that getting a truly striking design on paper is very difficult, but finding the right artisan to perfectly execute it is at least as big of a challenge. In this case the maker must have been a highly skilled craftsman, because the execution and the finish of this truly beautiful pendant are simply marvelous.
What makes this hand-crafted light fixture extra special are ofcourse the inlaid and large chunks of transparent glass combined with large and smaller stained glass chunks in beautiful amber color.
Both with the light switched on and off, all these uniquely shaped pieces of glass make this pendant a work of art on your ceiling.
Over the many decades the color (or patina) has made this light even more beautiful and this elegant design after more than 100 years still is as appealing as the day it was made. This perfect size pendant survived two world wars and for all the crude and organical looking glass 'chunks' to still be in there AND for this light to still be this pretty and complete is like an ode to both the maker and to this lights' former owners. They clearly understood what it takes to both create and take care of something that is truly beautiful. Thanks to its extra large size and great condition this alabaster chandelier is one of the best alabaster chandeliers that we have ever seen or sold. This antique and entirely hand-carved alabaster chandelier will light up your days and evenings in a way that no modern fixture ever could. Anyone who has ever seen one in real life knows exactly what we are talking about. For this stunning, four light specimen they clearly used the perfect alabaster rock, because this unique shade comes with numerous and evenly divided black veins. That combined with the whiter veins and patches that have formed in this mineral stone over a period of thousands of years makes it truly special.
We have several interior designer clients who are looking for these largest of alabaster chandeliers and they know that finding one over 25 inches in diameter is like the proverbial needle in the haystack. This not only is one of the largest (in diameter) antique alabaster pendants that we have ever had the pleasure of offering, it also is one of the deepest/highest. However, what takes this rare size chandelier to a level of its own are the scrolling leaf and flower patterns that are deeply and sharply hand carved all around the body. This level of workmanship was rare, even in the early 1900s and since this light would have cost a small fortune in those days, you can rest assure that only the best artisan would have been allowed to do these (exceptional) carvings.
The original rope hanging to this monumental chandelier was 'shot' and we replaced it with bronzed chain that perfectly complements the entire look and feel of this majestic pendant. Combined with the large, original and height adjustable alabaster canopy this rare light can be used and enjoyed in all kinds of interiors and in all kinds of living spaces. For it to still be in this very good condition after more than 100 years is like an ode to the craftsmanship of early 1900 artisans in Europe. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this chandelier in general and the one of a kind, supersize shade in particular. In real life (or in person) our antiques always have that little bit extra and this unique and truly large alabaster chandelier...
