Hans Agne Jakobsson Brass Wall Lamp, Set of 4 Mid-century from Sweden
Located in Forest, BE
Nice set of 4 brass wall lamps. They provide a warm atmosphere and even better when lighted. Made of thin strips of brass delicately riveted with a brass nail to the metal frame. Minimal details. Great to have them as a set of 4 and especially in that condition. When can get more upon request. (Two more available).

Important Kaj Gottlob brass one arm wall lamp, Fog Morup Denmark 1930's
Located in Forest, BE
One of most influant Danish architect of the early 1900. Brass wall lamp that can be used down or ud and even on the side. Large reflector with a long arm. Elegant, minimal and classical at the same time. A true master piece produced by lighting manufacturer Fog & Morup in Denmark. _____________________________________________________________ Niels August Theodor Kaj Gottlob, usually known as Kaj Gottlob, (9 November 1887 – 12 May 1976) was a Danish architect who contributed much to Neoclassicism and Functionalism both as professor of the School of Architects at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and as a royal building inspector. After qualifying from Borgerdyd School in 1905, Gottlob attended the Technical School (1905-1908) and the Royal Academy, graduating as an architect in 1914. At the time, he was one of the young neoclassicists who used to meet at the Free Architecture Society (Den fri Architektforening). He taught at the Technical School (1915–17) and was an assistant at the Royal Academy's Building School (1917–24). Between 1912 and 1923, he travelled to Greece, London, North Africa, Italy, Paris and Vienna. After first working as an assistant at the Academy's School of Architecture in 1917, he was appointed professor in 1924. In 1936, he succeeded Kristoffer Varming as royal building inspector and, in 1938, gave up his post as professor at the Academy. As a young man, Gottlob showed interest in classical architecture, influenced in part by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Works in the 1920s include a residence at 45 Dalgas Boulevard (1924) and St Luke's Church in Århus (1926). But like his peers, he soon turned to Nordic Neoclassicism, appreciating its sober, contemporary style. This can be seen in his Danish Student Hostel in Paris, completed in 1929. Though it was hardly international modernism, it was something of a breakthrough for Scandinavia. In designing Ørstedhus in 1934, Gottlob maintained some of the classical ideals, especially with the symmetry and hierarchical form of the facade. Standing on the corner...

Erik Gunnar Asplund, “GA9” Wall Lights for ASEA, Sweden 1940s
Located in Munster, NRW
With its organically shaped blown glass shade, especially rare in this opaline frosted glass version, the GA9 resembles a floating droplet. Designed by Swedish architect Erik Gunnar Asplund, widely regarded as the godfather of Swedish modernism, this lamp embodies his signature geometric clarity and structural ingenuity. Like his Stockholm City Library, it balances simplicity with innovation. A bent arm holds the glass, while another secures the light source at the luminaire’s center. The black lacquered metal curves organically, contrasting with polygonal backplates—an interplay of geometry and fluidity that defines Asplund’s vision. The large, mushroom-like shades diffuse light in a soft, mesmerizing glow, enhancing the atmosphere beyond mere functionality. Asplund’s influence extended to Scandinavian design icons such as Alvar Aalto, Erik Bryggman...

A Rare Paavo Tynell Wall Lamp, Taito Oy 1950s
Located in Helsinki, FI
An extremely rare and brilliant wall lamp/sconce by Paavo Tynell, manufactured by Taito Oy in Finland in the 1950s. These kinds of wall lamps are highly sought after by collectors as well as end users world wide. The design is simple, pragmatic and elegant with a little bit of flare, brought by the little brass star decorations. Star decorations are very rarely seen in Tynell lamps, but they are featured in the Finland house catalogue. The combination of brass and glass has proven to be an excellent combo and a favorite by customers. The item is in very good original condition. The glass shades are light blue, however the colour changes into more of a white tonevwhen the lights are on. Please refer to the attached pictures for a better understanding. Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish designer who is well renowned around the world for his incredible lighting fixtures and lamps. Tynell is known as the man who “illuminated Finland” and his works can be found in numerous public offices and buildings such as the Finnish Parliament House and the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. Tynell started as a sheet metal worker´s apprentice at G.W. Sohlbergs workshop in 1906. After that he moved to Taidetakomo Koru Oy in 1912, which was a metal workshop specializing in electric light fixtures. Then Paavo studied at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki and after that he taught in it too. Paavo then founded Taito Oy in 1918 with a number of colleagues. Taito produced a number of other items other than just light fixtures in the early years, however the main focus became lamps after Finland adopted the use of electricity. By the 1930s Finnish households started buying light fixtures as the use of electricity became more common. In the 1920s Taito`s main sales were still mostly public commissions, for example the Paimio Sanatorium which was designed by Alvar aalto. After WW2 and the quite challenging shortage years in Finland, Tynell finally had his major breakthrough. His style became quite distinctive and was mainly aimed at the U.S. markets. He sold both catalogue lamps as well as commissioned works through Finland House in N.Y. Although his late 1940s-1950s style was widely criticized at first in Finland, he stuck to it, and luckily so. It wasn´t long before his lamp fixtures became Finland House´s best selling product. Nowadays Tynell´s high end lamps fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars worldwide, and deservingly so. Antique and Vintage Sconces and Wall Lights for the Bedroom, Living Room and More

From the kitchen to the bedroom and everywhere in between, there is one major part of home decor that you definitely want to master: lighting. Carefully selected vintage sconces and wall lights can do wonders in establishing mood and highlighting your distinctive personality.

We’re a long way from the candelabra-inspired chandeliers of the medieval era. Lighting is no longer merely practical, and lighting designers have been creating and reinventing lighting solutions for eons. Because of the advancements crafted by these venturesome makers, we now have the opportunity to bring unique, customizable lighting solutions into our homes.

It’s never been easier to create dramatic bedrooms, cozy kitchen areas and cheerful bars than it is today. Think of an elegant wall sconce as functional and as a work of art, adding both light and style to your hallways, whimsical kids’ rooms and elsewhere.

When choosing a lighting solution, first determine what your needs are: Will you opt for a moody or a bright feel? The room that will serve as your home office will need adequate lighting — think “the brighter, the better” for this particular setting.

For the bedroom, bedside wall lamps with warm-temperature bulbs instead of bedside table lamps could be the way to go to induce a sense of calm or intimacy. Try to match the style of the wall light or sconce that you’re installing to the overall design scheme of your room. It’s never “just a light.” You should approach the lighting of a room with a mindset that is one part practical and one part aesthetics-driven.

Let 1stDibs help you set the mood with the right antique and vintage wall lights and sconces for your home. Our collection includes every kind of fixture, from sculptural works by Austrian craftsman J.T. Kalmar to chic industrial-style wall sconces, from adjustable painted aluminum wall lamps designed by Artemide to a wide variety of minimalist mid-century modern masterpieces.
