About the Item

In 1968 Gae Aulenti created for Candle Italy the "Rimorchiatore" lamp in lacquered metal and plastic acetate, characterized by a structure with multiple cylinders of different heights which fulfill the function of vase, lamp and ashtray. Gae Aulenti, pseudonym of Gaetana Emilia Aulenti (Palazzolo dello Stella, Udine 1927 - Milan, 2012), is considered one of the best architects of her generation, and has left an indelible mark on the history of international design. After her formative years between Florence and Turin, she decided to move to Milan; here she graduated in 1953 from the Milan Polytechnic; since 1956 she has worked professionally, dedicating herself to architectural design, interior and industrial design, and theatrical scenography. His architectural projects are many and prestigious, including the redevelopment and new installations of the Musée d'Orsay (1980-86) and the Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou (1982-85); the redevelopment of Palazzo Grassi in Venice (1985-86); the access to the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence (1990); the Palazzo Italia at EXPO '92 in Seville; the renovation of the former Papal Scuderie at the Quirinale in Rome (1999); the redevelopment of Piazzale Cadorna in Milan (2000); the "Museo" and "Dante" stations on the metro line 1 and the redesign of Piazza Cavour and Piazza Dante in Naples (1999-2002); the new Asian Art Museum in San Francisco (1996-2003); the Museum of Catalan Art in Barcelona (1985-2004); the renovation of the Palavela in Turin for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games; the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo (2006). During his long career he has received many awards and recognitions including the "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur" (Paris), Honorary Member of the American Institute of Architects - Hon. FAIA; Praemium Imperiale for Architecture (Tokyo), "Cavaliere di Gran Croce" of Merit of the Italian Republic (Rome), honorary degree in Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (Providence - USA).
