Antique 19th century Louis XVI gold leaf gilt French Pier mirror with crest
About the Item
On offer here is a stunning and rare tall pier mirror that was made in Southern France in the mid-19th century, circa 1850. The mirror frame is lavishly adorned with many natural ornaments such as flowers, leaves, and reed plumes. At the top of the mirror sits an elaborately ornamented crown with a centrally placed bird's nest flanked by two birds and richly decorated with leaves, flowers, and reed plumes.
The ornaments were crafted from a mixture of plaster and ground beef bones internally reinforced with steel wires. The inclusion of ground beef bones combined with the mercury-gilded mirror glass indicates an early mirror, dating to around 1850. This mirror is a dam mirror, with "dam" referring to the architectural element that is a narrow piece of wall between two windows. Such mirrors are rare due to their narrow and tall appearance.
The mirror frame is fully engraved with a subtle geometric cross pattern. The mirror frame is entirely gold leaf gilded and has developed a beautiful patina over the years.
The authentic mirror glass is a thick piece of mercury-gilded glass that perfectly complements the antique character of the frame. The glass exhibits the characteristic mercury mist and has many small spots and some superficial scratches.
The mirror glass was removed from the frame, and the entire piece was gently cleaned and securely reinstalled. Finally, a new pine wood backing was placed to protect the mirror glass.
