The temptation of St Anthony. Oil on canvas. 17th c., after David Teniers II
Located in Madrid, ES
Temptations of San Antonio Abad. Oil on canvas. 17th century, following the model of David Teniers II (Antwerp, 1610-Brussels, 1690). Oil on canvas showing a figurative scene located inside a cave. To the right, you can see a cross standing, supported; to the left, a hut; and in the center of the painting appears an elderly, bearded man, leaning on a table on which there is a ceramic jug and a skull, with an open book at the foot of it. The man looks towards a woman, who points to something outside, and appears accompanied by a large frog and a series of ghostly beings or monsters dressed in brightly colored cloth and clothing. San Antonio Abad or Antonio Magno (251-356) was a Christian monk, considered the founder of the eremitical movement. He was tempted numerous times by the devil while he was in the desert, becoming a subject frequently represented in art (as can be seen in this oil painting). He is represented in a black habit because the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of San Antonio (Hospitals) was placed under his patronage, being the color of the habits of the members of this order (the tau or Egyptian cross was also the symbol chosen by they). David Teniers II or El Joven was a prominent Flemish painter and engraver, son of David Teniers El Viejo or I and father of David Teniers III, much appreciated at the time for his scenes of villagers and common people, his paintings of monkey painters, etc. . He dealt with the theme of the Temptations of Saint Anthony...

Okitenugui Kabuto Samurai Helmet Shaped as a Head Towel Saika, Early Edo Period
Located in Milano, IT
Okitenugui kabuto Samurai helmet shaped as a head towel Saika, early Edo period, 17th century The Haruta armorers who moved to Kii province in the early 17th century, took the name from the village where they worked, Saika, near Wakayama, possibly on request of the local daimyo, Asano Yukinaga, a great armour amateur. Specialised in the construction of plate helmets, they produced mainly two typologies of kabuto: one with six plates covered with a chrysanthemum-shaped plate on top and one shaped as a “head towel”, called okitenugui. The latter type of kabuto employs very heavy plates crafted in a curved manner and was improved in order to make it resistant to firearms. This okitenugui kabuto features some distinctive decorations of the Haruta school, including the application of cut-out iron elements, including eyebrows, washers and lozenge-shaped decorations on the sides. The ring on the top, however, is a rare feature and could be used to hold a small war flag.

Adoration of the Shepherds, Oil on Copper, Signed, Alonso Del Arco
Located in Madrid, ES
Adoration of the Shepherds. Oil on copper. Signed (lower right corner). DEL ARCO, ALONSO (Madrid, h. 1635-1704). Oil on copper showing a Christian religious theme on the left side, in the foreground, and a second scene towards the bottom of the composition, on the right side of the painting. The figures have been placed in a natural environment, in which a rocky construction stands out towards the center, which has a door and a pillar with a pedestal of classicist influence. Under this frame, and illuminated by a break of Glory, is the scene of the Adoration of the Shepherds, with the Virgin showing Jesus, accompanied by Saint Joseph and a group of shepherds on the right, with the mule and the ox showing the heads and a series of elements on the ground. In the background, to the right, you can see three figures, which could be the angel's warning to the shepherds. In the lower right corner of the copper, on the front of the stone that appears, is a signature (ArCo). Regarding the composition of the present copper, it is necessary to note the similarity and influence of an engraving made by Lucas Vorsterman I in 1620 (based on a painting by Rubens...

Gold and Enamel Devotional Pendant or Reliquary, Mallorca School, Spain
Located in Madrid, ES
Reliquary or devotional pendant. Gold, enamel. Mallorcan school, 17th century. Devotional gold pendant decorated with edge enamels in various shades that shows, on the one hand, Saint John the Baptist as a Child accompanied by the Lamb, and, on the other, Santa Marta de Betania on the dragon. The gold piece that frames the aforementioned images has a ring at the top, as well as a composition of plant elements alternated with architectural motifs. Compare for example with the pieces in the collection of the Museo Valencia de Don Juan (Madrid); the 17th century Spanish reliquary pendant from the Metropolitan Museum in New York with the Adoration of the Shepherds; or the gold, diamond and enamel pendant with the Immaculate Conception found in Ranger's House (London); or the so-called Custodian Angel Medal...

Antique and Vintage Collectibles and Curiosities for Sale

Antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities can bring whimsy and wonder to any interior.

Decorating with old scientific instruments, historical memorabilia and vintage musical instruments, as well as other authentic collectibles and curiosities that can be found on 1stDibs, presents an opportunity to create a unique, natural history museum-like atmosphere in your home that can provoke conversation as often as it pays tribute to how far we’ve come in understanding our world.

And bringing collectibles and curiosities into your space is actually on trend — Wunderkammern, or curiosity cabinets, were all the rage in Europe during the 1500s and continued to have adherents there and in the U.S. in the following centuries. Today, however, they’re experiencing a real surge in popularity and influencing how many interior designers are furnishing and decorating homes — combining contemporary with antique, scientific with tribal, earthly with extraterrestrial, Les Lalanne tables with Flemish tapestries.

The original Wunderkammern were entire rooms filled with objects demonstrating their owners’ worldly knowledge: A proper one included artificiala or preciosa (objets d’art); naturalia (such as skeletons, shells, minerals); exotica (taxidermy or dried plants); and scientifica (scientific instruments), frequently alongside religious relics and ancient artifacts.

Pay tribute to a history of rich and diverse musical traditions that have taken shape all over the world by decorating your home with a collection of antique and vintage musical instruments — with a little help from strong hanging wire or some wall hooks, vintage brass instruments such as a gong, French horn or trumpet can help elevate a home office or complement the efforts you’ve made to ensure a welcoming vibe in your home’s entryway. Bells or antique wind instruments can add provocative metallic contrasts to dark woods as tabletop decorative objects.

Create an intriguing focal point with Georgian scientific instruments, such as stick barometers with mahogany cases or lacquered brass telescopes. These items stem from an era named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who ruled England in succession starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign, which lasted until 1837). Just as there was beautiful jewelry produced during the period that today is coveted by collectors, there is much to be found in the collectibles and curiosities realm too.

Wanderlust, nostalgia and a shared love of good design are contributing factors to certain trends in decorating — just as vintage trunks and luggage have reappeared as furniture or home accents in a bedroom or foyer, decorating with globes, maps or nautical objects is similarly rooted in the allure of travel and a penchant for the stylish finishing touch that collectibles bring to our homes.

Find a wide range of antique and vintage collectibles and curiosities on 1stDibs.
