Industrial Sublime Modernism & the Transformation of NY's Rivers, 1900-1940
Located in valatie, NY
Industrial Sublime: Modernism and the Transformation of New York's Rivers, 1900-1940 by Kristen M. Jensen, Bartholomew F. Bland, Katherine E. Manthorne, Wendy Greenhouse, and Ellen E. Roberts. Fordham University Press, 2013. 1st Ed softcover. Co-published with the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers. The exhibition ran from October 12, 2013, through January 17, 2014. It was not until the first decade of the 20th century, as artists like Robert Henri and John Sloan turned their attention to the urban scene, that American art shifted its focus from bucolic landscapes to the cities, the towns, the crowds, especially the raucous urban scene of Manhattan, by then the nation's most important city. This movement away from painting the land to painting the life on the street is often seen as a clean break with the depiction of the landscape, and with landscape painting generally as a mainstay of American art in the face of European Modernism. However, artists continued to paint the Hudson River, as well as its tributaries, the Harlem and East rivers, and the great harbor of New York City. What was different was their approach. Giving way the romantic ideals of earlier painters, artists like Henri and Sloan, and later, Georgia O'Keeffe, George Ault, Edward Hopper, and Preston Dickinson...

Picasso & Marie-Therese, L'Amour Fou by Richardso & Diana Widmaier, 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Picasso and Marie-Therese, L'amour Fou by John Richardso, Picasso and Diana Widmaier. Published by Gagosian Gallery, New York, 2011. 1st Ed exhibition(4/14-6/25/2011) hardcover catalog with dust jacket. Picasso and Marie-Thérèse: L’amour fou brings together the paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints inspired by one of Picasso’s most ideal models and enduring passions. The exhibition is curated by the eminent Picasso biographer, John Richardson, together with Marie-Thérèse’s granddaughter, art historian Diana Widmaier Picasso, who is currently preparing a catalogue raisonné of Picasso’s sculptures. In 1927, on a street in Paris, Picasso encountered the unassuming girl, just shy of eighteen years old, who would become his lover and one of modern art’s most famous muses. “I am Picasso,” he announced. The name meant nothing to Marie-Thérèse so he took her to a bookshop to show her a monograph of his paintings and asked if he could see her again. Flattered and curious, she agreed, and thus began a secret love affair that would establish Marie-Thérèse as the primary inspiration for Picasso’s most daring aesthetic experiments in the decade to come. With A flip book...

Fighting for Love in the Century of Extinction, Signed
Located in valatie, NY
Fighting for Love in the Century of Extinction: How Passion and Politics Can Stop Global Warming by Eban Goodstein. Published by University Press of New England, 2007. 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. The central idea in Fighting for Love in the Century of Extinction is simple: Unchecked, global warming threatens to destroy one of every two animals, birds, plants, reptiles, forests, fish and other creatures alive today on the earth. This looming ecological collapse will only be arrested if we can articulate and embrace what the natural world means to each of us, and then fight a series of hard political battles to preserve creation. On a subject about which it is easy to feel despair, Goodstein offers a realistic, ambitious, and hopeful political solution to avoid a century of mass extinction, a vision grounded in a moral view that embraces the interconnection of all life forms on the planet. Emerging from his work as both an economist and a leader in the clean energy movement, this passionate book sets a new frame for helping Americans understand global warming as the challenge of our generation. Weaving personal narrative with scientific facts, Goodstein begins with an overview of the current global warming crisis. In Chapters 2 and 3 (“Wealth” and “Knowledge”) he explores the question of whether the scale of mass extinction we are beginning to witness in the 21st century has more ominous implications for human welfare than it did in the 20th century. By destroying so much of creation, will we destroy the foundation of our own material prosperity? By tearing out so many pages in the book of life...

Everyday Decorating
By Rizzoli International Publications, Jeffrey Bihuber
Located in New York, NY
Jeffrey Bilhuber, one of the most sought-after voices in interior design, offers practical advice and easy-to-follow tips that inspire and empower the reader to make enlightened design decisions. Jeffrey Bilhuber has created the ultimate decorating handbook for those who love to go to Instagram or Pinterest for inspiration and design knowledge. Kicking aside the standard interior decorator format of showcasing work house by house, the book is divided into chapters that illustrate how to make your home more comfortable, happy, colorful, personal, lighter and brighter, sexy, charming, and cozy. Using iconic images spanning the breadth of his illustrious career, each page sings with a practical takeaway that leaves the reader thinking, ""Well, I never thought of it like that."" Bilhuber's classically informed point of view mixed with his tell-it-like-it-is humor make for memorable tips that will prove valuable the next time you're shopping for a sofa, making a bed, or considering paint colors. From sleek city townhouses to rambling country manors, he's found that ultimately all clients have the same goals regardless of interests, budget, or location. Those clients have included bold-face names like Anna Wintour, Iman, Mariska Hargitay, and Elsa Peretti. And the same advice he shared with them, he now shares with you. About The Author Jeffrey Bilhuber founded his eponymous design business, Bilhuber and Associates, nearly 30 years ago. He is known for his uniquely American perspective that combines tradition and modern sensibilities. Since founding his firm, his work has been published in more than 200 design books, as well as every major national and international shelter magazine, including prominent features in Architectural Digest, where he has always been at the top of the AD 100 list. Decorate Happy: Bold, Colorful Interiors
By Rizzoli International Publications, Anthony Baratta
Located in New York, NY
The first solo book by celebrated interior designer Anthony Baratta, Decorate Happy showcases Baratta's preppy-chic style in a pattern-filled guide to decorating with verve and style. Anthony Baratta's rooms are happy. Whether they are found in the country or the city, these maximalist rooms are designed to make you smile. In his first solo book, Anthony Baratta, whose work has graced more than fifty magazine covers and been celebrated in the Cooper-Hewitt, shares twelve of his most recent houses, all in their own way perfect examples of his Classic high-color, high-pattern all-American style. Some nod to the historical importance of centuries past, like an eighteenth-century house in Colonial Williamsburg; some are nautical chic. Some are glorious pop art, with mod rooms and bright primary colors, while others are chicly rustic. Although all the houses are unique, their rooms share one consistent underpinning: joy. Colorful, pattern-filled, life-affirming--these are rooms where life is meant to be lived to the fullest. About the author Anthony Baratta, the king of East Coast chic, is one of the most celebrated and respected interior designers of the day with a global following of loyal fans. Formerly half of the iconic design dream team Diamond Baratta...

Backgammon Lineal Wood Case with Glass Chips and Dice
By Orfeo Quagliata
Located in Naucalpan, Edo de Mex
Backgammon is a very old strategic board game, from which its origin is still undefined. A true Classic game about tactics and luck played around the globe. Taking this Classic as inspiration, Orfeo collaboration joined skills to create a board game with stimulating materials and astounding chips. Shined a spotlight on to the raw materials used to create it. The exterior of the board is composed of two elements, a metalic box and a thinly sliced oyster cut veneer of parota wood. The oysters are sourced from reclaimed branches of these gigantic trees; a material that is commonly discarded as fire wood given the difficulties of processing it. Underneath the wood they have used a single sheet of meticulously oxidized metal that is laser cut to size, then assembled into a box by one of their master craftsmen. Opening the chest you’ll find a treasure of glass checkers and dice handmade by Orfeo Quagliata’s artisans. Orfeo takes his most interesting glass techniques to apply them to all the chips in the game. The checkers are manufactured in two different processes. The "Barcodes" technique is a fine linear design with schemes of different colors that contrast between one competitor and another. Thin strips of different colored glass are placed next to each other and then fused into a single piece, from which circular pieces are drilled, ground and hand polished to form the chip. The more sober and bitone "Roarshax" technique presents an electrifying texture on the top of a transparent body. Meanwhile the dice are solid glass cubes...

Fred Herzog, Vancouver Photographs by Fred Herzog, Signed Edition
Located in valatie, NY
Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs by Fred Herzog. Signed Edition exhibition catalog (Vancouver Art Gallery January 25-May 13, 2007). 160 pages with numerous color photographs throughout. "Iconic and influential color images of Vancouver street life from a master photographer who has spent the past fifty years documenting the city, published to coincide with a major exhibition of his work. His eye dwells on the raw urban underbelly of the city: second-hand shops, vacant lots, barber shops and greasy spoons, crowded with people and their stuttering dreams. Since he arrived in Vancouver from Germany in 1953, Fred Herzog has roamed the city's back streets with his camera. Herzog draws upon documentary traditions while incorporating an outsider's sensitivity to a new environment. His color images of street life in the 1950s and '60s prefigure the "New Color" of photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. The text includes essays by Grant Arnold...
