This silver plated polo tankard was produced in the U.K. circa 1953. It features engraved lettering at front, reading "Calcutta Polo Club, 1953, Low Handicap Subsidiary." The tankard features a wide bottom and slightly smaller opening with a large single handle.
The tankard could have been used as a prize to a competition winner or given out to members of the Calcutta Polo Club each year. The reverse side features names associated with the title "The Panthers" and numbers associated with the names; presumably club members.
The modern game of polo originated in Manipur, a northeastern state of India. The Silchar Polo Club was founded in 1859 by British military officers and tea planters, after Lieutenant Joe Sherer saw the locals playing polo and decided to learn the game. From India, polo spread as fast as its enthusiasts could travel, appearing in Malta in 1868, England in 1869, Ireland in 1870, Argentina in 1872, and Australia in 1874.
