1918s Small Brass Magnetic Pocket Compass Signed Negretti & Zambra Antique Tool
Located in Milan, IT
Small pocket and travel compass made of chromed brass, supplied to British army officier during the First World War. Compass in the shape of a pocket watch, equipped with a lid with snap closure with release button inside the ring, the instrument consisting of a magnetized needle free to rotate on a horizontal plane marking the direction of magnetic North. Signed Negretti & Zambra London. Compass card with 8 winds. Diameter 4.5 cm - 1.7 inches, thickness 1.2 cm - 0.3 inches. Very goof condition, fully functional. Enrico (Henry) Negretti (Como 1817 - London 1879), emigrated to London in 1829, where he attended the London Mechanics Institute, at the same time starting an apprenticeship in a laboratory of precision optical instruments. In 1859 he joined Joseph Zambra (1822-1897), a manufacturer of scientific instruments, and they established the Negretti & Zambra Ltd, with numerous branches in London, and soon they had a good reputation both at home and abroad because of the excellence of their products. In the early years of the company, they limited production to meteorological instruments, or, as they defined them, "philosophical instruments". About in 1857 Negretti & Zambra were commissioned by the British government to investigate about the temperature of the sea along the coasts, to clarify which influence the temperature had on migration and habits of fishes and which were the seasons and temperatures more suitable for fishing. For these investigations, the Negretti & Zambra realized for the Admiral Fitzroy...

Antique Extra Large Gothic Revival Bronze & Glass, Church Lantern Pendant Light
Located in Lisse, NL
Truly impressive and extra large, hexagonal design, pure Gothic, six-light lantern. If you are a collector of truly amazing Gothic antiques then this large and possibly unique church lantern could be flying your way soon. With antique light fixtures as one of our specialities, we have never seen a Gothic Revival lantern with so many and such pure Gothic details. Let alone one of this amazing size and beauty and the stunning nickel-like patina makes this unique antique even more beautiful. It is getting ever harder to find all handcrafted antique Gothic fixtures of this age and because of the quality and quantity of the pure Gothic details we are convinced that this amazing specimen was originally made for a church or perhaps the entrance of a large monastery. The stunning, Gothic church window-like design of the six frames in which the six original, cathedral glass panels are placed is the first thing that you cannot fail to notice. The Gothic finial at the bottom of the six Gothic design 'arms' is another marvelous design element. The six bronze gargoyle sculptures potruding from each of the six corners of the higher part of this pendant too are as Gothic as they come. Less visible in our photos are the trefoil symbols just below the top of the canopy. In our view this is the ideal antique light fixture / lantern for a high entry hall of a Gothic Style (inspired) home, building, monastery or church. The stunning design is one thing, but we also believe that you will hardly ever find a real antique Gothic Revival fixture that is larger, in better condition or more impressive than this amazing light. All six, original beveled glass panels too are in very good condition. This is also, because the top half is protected by the bronze frame and how this is placed about an inch away from the glass panels. This too is another great design feature that we have never seen before. Both with the light switched on and off this pendant is unlike anything you will have ever seen and it will never fail to impress. Inside this striking, large and almost 50 pounds weighing Gothic lantern is a stem with the six original brass sockets. They will be rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage upon arrival in the country where this Gothic antique will be used and enjoyed. Mind you, this antique lantern will easily take a total of 400 watts and with a dimmer switch attached you can always create the perfect atmosphere for every occasion. Thanks to the hook inside the Gothic canopy...
