BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Set of 8 "Tião" Chairs, by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil, 1959
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Whitstable, GB
Sergio Rodrigues Tião dining chair, Brazil 1959 Tião is a comfortable, classic and elegant chair designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1959, and manufactured by Oca. We have a set of eight Tião chairs in dark solid hardwood frame, re-upholstered in a light grey fabric. In good vintage condition. Beautiful deep wood colour. Minor wear commensurate with age and use, for a vintage piece. Provenance of this set of chairs is a family home in São Paulo, where they formed a set with the iconic Burton Table, also by Sergio Rodrigues. Passionate about drawing and wood art since he was a boy, the world-renowned Sérgio Rodrigues (1927-2014) made history as a precursor of Brazilian design. He revolutionised aesthetics in the country in the 1960s with his original style of curved and generous shapes, representative of Brazilian culture. With this approach he created the Mole armchair in 1957, still an innovative design today and one of the most important works of the 20th century, responsible for projecting Brazil on the world design stage. The designer from Rio designed several other pieces that became design icons, such as the Mocho bench, the Oscar armchairs, Kilin and Diz armchairs...

"Sobreiro" Cabinet by the Campana Brothers, Brazil 2018
By Campana Brothers
Located in Utrecht, NL
Made in limited edition of 150, this cabinet is part of the exclusive Sobreiro Collection of cork furniture designed by the Campana Brothers. The Brazilian designers brought a sculptural whimsy to the lightweight, sustainable material of cork, which is visible in the gently rounded edges and sculpted handles of this cabinet. With this Sobreiro Cabinet, the Campana brothers brought forth that multitude of textures and effects that cork can create. It is composed of cork and a wooden structure made from expanded natural cork agglomerate, a material made by heating the cork and does not contain any additive. Besides aesthetics, cork's sustainability is key to its appeal. Cork (Sobreiro is Portuguese for cork oak tree) is one of the most sustainable natural materials to harvest, most importantly because its trees never get cut down; every nine years, a tree's bark is removed and turned into everyday objects, such as wine stoppers, shoes, and now, design furniture. For the Campana Brothers cork...
