About the Item

Jindrich Halabala patinated bentwood armchairs with original upholstery, 1940s Czech Republic. A pair of two Jindrich Halabala bentwood armchairs with original upholstery from the 1940s in the Czech Republic represent an iconic seating set. Produced by Thonet, this particular model, designated H-227, showcases the hallmark of midcentury design in Central Europe. The chairs, designed by Jindrich Halabala, feature a harmonious balance between uncomplicated, elegant geometry and the soft, comfortable seat complemented by dynamic bentwood elements. Employing modernist terminology, Halabala cultivated a distinctive aesthetic characterized by passion, streamlined form, and humanistic qualities, rendering these pieces suitable for inviting and functional domestic environments. It is important to note that the upholstery exhibits minor signs of wear. therefore, reupholstering is recommended before use. Additionally, the wood displays some patina, but remains in very good original condition. About the creator: Jindrich Halabala was born in 1903 in the Czech Republic. He commenced his career as an apprentice in his father's workshop, gaining foundational woodworking knowledge. Subsequently, he attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, where he graduated in 1926. Following his education, Halabala joined the Bohumil Hübschmann studio in Prague and later assumed the role of Artistic Director at the UP Company. Under his guidance, the company adapted its production processes to meet the demands of contemporary consumers and commenced mass production of furniture based on Halabala's designs. The quality of the furniture produced is renowned and is comparable to that of leading European manufacturers.
