About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret Floating Back Armchair Chandigarh, circa 1950 An authentic piece from the legendary Chandigarh project, designed by Pierre Jeanneret in the early 1950s alongside his cousin Le Corbusier. These armchairs were originally commissioned for government and institutional buildings in Chandigarh, India, a utopian city conceived as a symbol of modernity after India’s independence. The “floating back” design is one of Jeanneret’s most celebrated creations: the solid teak structure, angular V-shaped legs, and gently curved armrests embody both functional clarity and sculptural strength. The detachable backrest, appearing to float between the arms, adds a lightness that became a hallmark of the Chandigarh aesthetic. As with most surviving examples, the cane weaving has likely been re-done over time — a common and necessary restoration given the natural wear of the material. The teak frame, however, carries its authentic patina and presence. Each chair is not only a functional object but a fragment of architectural history, representing the dialogue between European modernism and Indian craftsmanship. As a designer, I collect in the same way I create: with an eye for timelessness, honesty, and sculptural strength. These pieces live within my universe as sources of inspiration, and occasionally I make them available for others to acquire.

By Pierre Jeanneret

Authentic 'Office Chair' from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh (Ref. PJ-SI-28-B). In excellent condition - joints have been restored and cane work replaced. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing.
